I am not Ashamed
That I am Deaf
But rather that I am Conquered
By my Deafness
In Intensified Attack
This Ruthless Malady
Is Ravaging my Life
As it carries away the Spoils
It is taking Captive
The Beautiful World of Sound
And giving me as my Companion
The Agony of Silence
That Inescapable Tormenter
In Robbing me of the Ability to Hear
It is leaving me
With one less thing
That I am Competent to Do
Less of a Person
That I am Competent to Be
The Agony of Silence is not a Pain
Which I can bear in its Totality
As it wraps itself around me
Layer upon Layer
In its Deadly Encasement
I am Smothered in the Muted Quiet of Sounds
I can no longer Clearly Perceive
