This is me, fool that I am,
To lay down my life for pleasures at hand,
To take hold of things that fade,
And believing that joy is found in shade.
I think that I shouldn’t see more than this,
And maybe that I would be someone to miss,
If I left and took that final breath today,
What would I have at His feet to lay?
Could it be that I have pursued wrongly,
The things this world believes in strongly?
What do I have to show my King upon that day,
For all the blessings He has sent my way?
Do I give in to excess the joys of indulgence?
Do I allow my emotions too often to express?
Can I change who I am by my power alone,
Without ever coming before His throne?
What a fool I’ve been to think that I could,
Pick and choose what I consider bad and good!
To treat His word and decrees as a buffet,
Taking some and pushing others away.
Maybe it’s best that I realize this now,
Before it is too late, I choose this day to bow,
And I proclaim, again, that He is my King,
Lord of all lords, to the One whom I sing.
