TRUE and FALSE PROPHETS
by Zac Poonen

We read in Daniel 11:32, that those who are influenced by the
spirit of the antichrist will use smooth words (flattery) to draw
people to themselves. The one unmistakable characteristic of
every false prophet in history has been flattery. And the one
unmistakable characteristic of every true prophet has been rebuke.

False prophets flatter people in order to win them to their group,
or to build their own kingdoms, or to get honour, or to get money,
etc., Many of these false prophets correspond faithfully with
people, in order to retain their personal hold over them. Their
letters will not however contain words of rebuke and correction
(as in the letters of the Lord and of the apostles - as we read in
Revelation 2 and 3 and in the epistles). Instead, they will only
contain words of flattering commendation.

Smooth words will only defile your heart with pride and self-
satisfaction. Words of rebuke on the other hand will cleanse your
heart and make it pure. Jesus said "Those whom I love, I reprove
and I discipline" (Rev.3:19). Rebuke is one mark of Divine love.

When God sends a prophet into our midst, to rebuke us, that is
a proof of the fact that God loves us. When God forsakes a church,
it will "no longer have a prophet in its midst" (Psa.74:1,9) to rebuke
it. Instead, it will have preachers who preach smooth words (2 Tim.
4:3,4). That is a sad condition for any of God's people to be in.

In Revelation 2 and 3, we see that even though five of the seven
churches there were in a bad shape, yet the Lord had not forsaken
them as yet. The proof of this is seen in the fact that He sent a
prophet (John the apostle) to rebuke and correct them through his letters.

John had strong words even for the elders - words such as, "You
have left your first love....You are spiritually dead....You are
wretched and poor and blind and naked". If those elders and those
churches did not respond to those words of rebuke, and repent,
they would be forsaken.

Once the Lord "takes away the lampstand" (Rev.2:5), He will not
send His prophets to rebuke that church any more. The false
prophets will then take over, and smooth words will be heard
regularly at the meetings, Sunday after Sunday!! This has
happened in church after church, in generation after generation,
throughout these twenty centuries. And it is happening all around us today.

It is at such a time, that there is a great need for those "who know
God, who are strong, and who will do great things for Him" (v.32).
Because they know God, they will fear no man...

Lest someone reaches for a stone, my disclaimer is this. I fully agree with this short piece. That, however, does not mean I endorse everything this man holds to.

I had just posted on the whole flattery deal not too far back, and I actually agree that that is the best way to spread a net for people (and the enemy knows this) and is shown coming in the same, you can watch people fall for it all the time, but if you dont respond to it (as others might, flattering back) there is something wrong with you (because you dont).

I actually do agree there, as flattery is shown, so is good words and fair speeches, the prophets did not (nor did Jesus flatter any one)

Prov 29:5 A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.

Dan 11:21 And in his estate shall stand up a vile person,
to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom:
but he shall comein peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

Dan 11:32
And such as do wickedlyagainst the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries:
but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do
exploits.

No faithfulness in their mouths pertains to their flatteries

Psalm 5:9
For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness;
their throat
is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.

Dan 11:33-34
And they that understand among the people shall instruct many:
yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, manydays.
Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help:
but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.

Many not a few, and thats what is big these days, is the flattering tongue, its something worth asking to be kept fromProv 6:24 To keep thee from the evil woman,
from the flattery of the tongue of the strange woman

Just as the apostles speaks of certain using good words and fair speeches which deceive the hearts (of the simple)

So likewise does the strange woman

Prov 7:21
With her much fair speech she caused him to yield,
with the flattering of her lips she forced him.

The goodman is on a journey there, which sounds similar to our Lord and they as is shown here

Romans 16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly;
and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

None of the prophets spoke with a flattering tongue, if anything they often rubbed others the wrong way, look at the two in revelation they are not singing people Barney songs (folks rejoice they are dead) making it a holiday to give gives to one another.

It speaks of no remedy in relation to the prophets who were mocked verses well received here

But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till
there was no remedy.

As well as often being reproved and hardening ones neck without remedy

He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

Whereas in Revelation coming out from some place (Gods people) that they receive not anothers plagues would seem to be that time without remedy, or at least soon approaching it.

I never 100% agree with anyone myself, but I can agree with things that agree with the scriptures accordingly, and I agree here.

This is definately worth laying out in far better detail, so thanks for posting this.

Two problems with Poonen's declarations in this piece, though I agree, he gets a lot right.

John had strong words even for the elders - words such as, "You
have left your first love....You are spiritually dead....You are
wretched and poor and blind and naked". If those elders and those
churches did not respond to those words of rebuke, and repent,
they would be forsaken.
They would not be forsaken, they would just be removed from their positions as pastors.

Once the Lord "takes away the lampstand" (Rev.2:5), He will not
send His prophets to rebuke that church any more.
The "lampstand" being the pastor, it is clear he only removes one to replace him with another. God does not abandon His own. We cannot abandon Him, if we have truly believed and our confession of faith has been accepted by the Father.

He forsakes only those who never believe. With all who believe, He chastises, as a father does a son.

As I said, other than that, not a bad short piece.

I believe the lamp stand is the Spirit because the single salaried exalted pastor is not endorsed by the word.

Also....the guys premis is scriptural. And the he bashing continues.

I only share on this forum as the Spirit leads me. I went for a couple of months one time without sharing, for He wasn't leading me to.
The time may come when He tells me enough is enough. Now sling that stone.
