Before saying anything else theological, I would zero in on this simple fact
No matter what other objection we have, we know Jesus came to earth as a man, was mocked, suffered, left alone in the garden by God, ignored by his friends, eventually rejected by those he called his closest friends, and then was hung on a shameful cross with His Father no where in sight. Specific discussions of the why or what of your friend's child's death can come later, but perhaps sitting with this for a little bit will be best.
Can we deny the love of a God who would give His own Son, who came in the flesh, lived as we did and suffered in our place?
Maybe for now, that is enough.
31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
