Worship defined:

Worship is an act of religious devotion usually directed towards a deity. The word is derived from the Old English weorþscipe, meaning worship, honour shown to an object, which has been etymologised as "worthiness or worth-ship"—to give, at its simplest, worth to something.

Source: Worship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Worship has been used to describe a church meeting with the general order of service being: Sing, Sermon, Sing.

Worship has been used to describe a time of contemporary church music.

I think that contemporary used of the "worship" has been used to describe something that may include worship but whose essence is something else.

prayer: May use of the word "worship" be returned to its essence.

What are your thoughts on the essence and expression of worship?

As a 10-year "Worship Leader" I lament the fact that "worship" is often seen as music and singing. I am a music Leader, we worship God by listening to the Word, by singing and praising, but mostly by offering our entire lives to Him as a sacrifice which He is worthy of. Rom. 12:1-2

J. Oswald Sanders shared on worship in his book, Prayer Power Unlimited

Worship seldom conveys its full scriptural content, which includes the meaning "to bow down or prostrate oneself".

Worship is the adoring contemplation of God as He has revealed Himself in Christ and in the Scriptures.

It is the act of paying honor and reverence to God.

F.W. Faber caught the sense of the word in these lines [sometimes sung as a hymn]

How wonderful, how beautiful,
The sight of thee will be,
Thine endless wisdom, boundless power,
And aweful purity!

O how I fear thee, living God,
With deepest, tenderest fears;
And worship thee with trembling hope,
And penitential tears.

Worship flows from love, and where there is little love there will be little worship.

O come, let us worship and bow down: Let us kneel before the LORD our maker. (Psalm 95:6)
