Hello.

I'm just curious as to why we're only allowed 5 minutes to edit our own posts. I've posted on several other forums over the years and we've always been allowed a lot more time than that for editing. I have a tendency to make some rather long posts and, quite frankly, it can take me more than 5 minutes to read my own posts after they are posted. If/when I find a typo or some other mistake, it's generally beyond the 5 minute mark and I cannot edit my mistakes. Is it possible to have the editing time expanded just a bit? To at least 10 or 15 minutes or so? Thanks.

Because it makes it easier for the mods to keep track of what's said. (or someone can post something crazy, edit it, and say "wasn't me").

I do agree that five mins is a bit short though, as I am not good at proofreading my own posts :p

I figured as much myself, but, still, 5 minutes is like nothing at all.

This comes up at least a couple of times a year. The short edit time is because of the fact that people will intentionally post something inflammatory (or inappropriate) and then edit it after the fact to something more benign. When this happens it ends up looking like the people who respond in kind are attacking someone for no reason. Yes, I've seen this sort of thing happen on other forums that have longer edit times. Invariably the wrong person ends up getting banned because once a user edits a post the original form cannot be retrieved.

The suggestion we always make is simply to write your post in a standard word processing program and then once you're happy with it, copy and paste it into the site.

Alternatively, people can also not post inflammatory/inappropriate content. :p

I wasn't aware that the original form couldn't be retrieved. Thanks for your reply...this now makes sense.

The other thing you can do is read through your post before you hit post. I know we all like instant gratification but reading through you post before posting it can save you a lot of edit/save changes 4 or 5 times hoping the 5 minutes hasn't run out like I have had to do sometimes.....whew.....it can be exhausting.....lol

There are certain things that I must edit in my life but this process may take a tad longer than 5 minutes.
