Why do some profile pictures upload sideways

I'm guessing the pics are taken from a cell phone cam? There is some issue with cell phone cam pics turning sideways when being taken off the phone and moved to another location. I don't understand it. And it's not even every pic, so it's inconsistent. But that may be the cause here.

I have noticed this when editing a photo in some image editors. This seems to happen often, in my experience, when dealing with photos taken with an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod). Perhaps some of the sideways photos are being imported from an iPhone?

They're uploaded sideways because that's likely the original orientation. You'd have to flip the image in the direction you want it and then save it that way, then upload that.
