Is there a way to make it so you never subscribe to a thread? I feel it's okay to subscribe sometimes, but not all the time.

Yep. click the "settings" tab, then on the right side of the page click "general settiings"

Scroll down a little bit and under "messaging and notification" you will see "default thread subscription mode"

Set it to "do not subscribe" and the scroll to the bottom and click "save changes"
