What is this all about?

CC-gray_box_in_thread.jpg

Is the site experimenting with something?

On seemingly random occasions, this box appears - right in the middle of the web page. Clicking on the x-in-the-circle at the upper-right corner of the box does nothing. I must wait for the box to eventually go away. :(

Sometimes, it "jumps" / "moves" over to the side of the browser window, completely off of the thread page.

"What is the deal with this?"

Just wondering...

:)

That happens to me sometimes when I'm on youtube or playing a game. Sometimes just refreshing the page will do the trick, but usually I have to close out my browser and reopen it and go back to youtube or wherever I was..

That's a bad flash plugin....what you want to do is uninstall all versions of flash player in your computer via add/remove programs and remove flash players....

then go to this website and download one of these depending on OS and install it (with your browsers off/not on the internet while installing this or youtube/flash won't work in your browser..)

Adobe Flash Player Distribution | Adobe

Don't install the download packaages (like 892 kb) but download the full versions which are on the above website and then install it (these are the offline installers and have the complete package of flash)

for Chrome use PPAPI,
For firefox use NPAPI
for internet explorer use active X

I HATE chrome and IE. I rarely use FF because it takes too long to open and it crashes alot. I use Opera for about 98% of everything I do..

I use an opera based browser (yandex) and chrome is also based on opera somewhat so you'll need the PPAPI plugin but make sure to close out your browser, uninstall flash then install the downloaded one from the above link....

I tried downloading yandex one time. It installed fine but then there was like a black sheet over the start page and I couldn't get rid of it so I uninstalled it.

Whenever that happens to me, I close the browser, open it again, and it's fine. :)

Neither are based on each other. Opera is structured similarly to Chrome and uses the same Blink rendering engine.

The OP title reminds me of the opening to a Seinfeld comedy bit. "What's the deal with..." Lol. @Gary: Ultimatum is right. That message is regarding your Flash player plugin. Update or reinstall it, and you should be okay. If you continue to experience the same issue - and if it's only on this site, give it some time; a future update should resolve it.

The thing is --- I do not have any Flash player plugin installed. Nor do I have Flash anything-else installed.

The big question is -- what is making the box pop up in the first place?

:)

Probably an ad, you should use adblock plus

https://adblockplus.org

It has a plugin to block youtube ads (the dumb commercials before the actual video you want) and also block flash based ads and any other thing.....

don't worry I've used this plugin for 3-4 yrs and it is great! No malware only blocks it! lol......

I had a chat box appear yesterday. I was about to reply to a thread and a chat box with my name in it appeared. It even had sound attached like a bell. Scared the heck out of me. I hit the back browser to get rid of it. So, yes. I do think they are doing stuff on here in the day because my computer also would not let me use any one the things like the smiley icons and link, video, etc. All those things that we use to post in a thread were inoperable. This has happened twice on two separate occasions. It wasnt until after 10 pm or so that all appeared back to as it was..
It has not had a good effect on my computer..

The big answer is still Flash. I had the same popup before I remembered to install it a few weeks ago - and I had an adbocker at the time, even.

You will either need to install Flash to get rid of the popup, or you will need to use something that prohibits Flash content from loading altogether. Firefox has a couple of extensions for this, and I'm sure Chrome and Opera do as well. Not so sure about other browsers.

I appreciate all of the responses -- I really do. However, I think all of you are missing the point of the title question. What I want to know is -- why-and-what-for is the box about? The fact that it needs flash is beside the point. Who and / or What put the box up there to start with? What is the intended purpose of the box?

Can any of you who do have flash tell me what comes up in the box?

Thank you in advance...

:)

It's a notification pop-up. If you don't have flash player, how do you play games, or watch videos and such? Most everything you do on your 'puter requires flash..

Aaaaannnnnddddd????? :p

What is it trying to notify me about?

Does anyone know?

:)
It is trying to notify you that

YOU NEED TO LOAD AND/OR UPDATE YOUR FLASH PLAYER

If a website you visit includes flash data and it doesn't find a flash player (or it finds an old version) it will throw up the box to say

YOU NEED TO LOAD AND/OR UPDATE YOUR FLASH PLAYER

And just in case that didn't take, Capt Obvious says that

YOU NEED TO LOAD AND/OR UPDATE YOUR FLASH PLAYER

Bad day Gary?

Yeah. That chat box is composed of flash data. You have no flash player so it displays the black box in it's place and notifys you that

YOU NEED TO LOAD AND/OR UPDATE YOUR FLASH PLAYER
