I wondered about the green bars ever since I got here and rep points too. I have one green bar and one rep point. How does anyone even give rep points anyway. No one explained this, but then again I never asked lol.

At the bottom left of a person's post, there is a star icon. Click it and you can leave a comment, and your name so that person knows who to thank. :) You currently have only 1 power, so if you repped someone, you would raise up their rep point level by one point.. If someone with multiple powers reps you, you gain as many points as they have powers. For example, and I'll use tourist, lol, if he were to rep you, you would gain 98 points because tourist has 98 powers.

I think the bars are directly connected to the reputation, as a visual thingy, but I am not certain about that bit

The whole rep point/rep bar system is an enigma, even to mods. No one seems to know 100% how they all work together. I can say that 'likes' have no bearing on it at all. Some people say they understand, but how they do and the people who run the site don't tends to baffle me. Also they tend to be in conflict with one another over certain points.
If you're looking to have the green dots show under your name, most likely you'll have to wait for a mod to respond or see this post.
But at the end of the day it's not very relevant. People who agree with you or like you won't be paying attention to how many bubbles you have. And the same goes with those who disagree with or dislike you. And since any reason can be given for using them, it really doesn't reflect a whole lot on anything. I've had people give me rep points to say bad things to me, because it's anonymous.
But yes, sometimes the fact that something isn't working right, even if it's meaningless, can drive you crazy.

To be honest I don't care what people think of me. The only thing I'm truly concerned with is my relationship with God. I was just curious about it. I have an inquisitive nature. I like to know everything I can about everything.

I think you are right

I mean look at this...2 pages long. I bet if I started a 'serious' thread, I wouldn't get that attention LOL!

apparently, rumors abound and nobody really knows for sure. Exciting times at CC

you've had people give you rep points to badmouth you? I'll give you one now because I can and not to badmouth you...what is the matter with people?

I have found that if the person giving you a REP has a high REP POWER, then you stand a better chance of their power moving you up, say.75 % of 1 point (3/4 of a full REP point.) Sometimes, if you were already close to the next point level, that one post might be enough to increase you by a new number.

If, however, the givers have low numbers, themselves, then five or six people of low reputation level might have to all REP you before your own score will change even 1 point.
I thought they were status symbols (kidding) I was going to start wearing fancy clothes

actually, I just thought it was comforting to see some rep points (6 but should be 7) kind of like taking a teddy bear to bed

The amount of powers a person has determines whether or not your rep points will increase. If someone with no powers reps you, then your rep points stay the same. If someone with say, 20 powers reps you, you will gain 20 rep points, plus gain a green bar. Post numbers count too. You get 1 power at 50 posts, and then the mods determine a number after that for you to get to before getting another power from your posts.. You have your rep turned off, so we can't see your green bars, but we can see your number of rep powers.

well I see you're doing good...can I have some?

I'm totally kidding in all of this...I did have some sort of glitch wherein nothing showed but all the answers I am getting are all so different, I think it's a wonder any of us have some

interesting thing is, I DO NOT have the rep turned off

Hmmm, then I guess they can't be hidden.

It doesn't matter though, I doubt any of us read a post and then go "hmm, Jack has half as many rep points as Joe so I'll agree with Jack" :)
