    Default Watching movies online

    Hi all,

Sometimes I want to watch movies online with friends. These include with my online friends. The temptation is to try some of these so called "free " sites as I don't have netflix on my computer.
I really want to do things legally because it is it my christian duty to be honest in even small things.

So my question is : is there a way to know wether a website is legit or not ( apparently some movies are in the public domain) and could someone recommend movie sites that dont pirate movies but get their licenses from Sony etc.

I am will to pay up to 4 dollars for a movie to watch it legally - its just that I dont want to have to subscribe.

Thank you for understanding my dilemma - I really want to spend a nice time with friends ...I just want to do it with a clear conscience.

They're legal, but ads are what pays for them to show the movies. As far as viruses, they are on pretty much all sites online..

If they were legal the movies wouldnt always get deleted and sites closed.. Maybe some are legal but most arent due to copyright and stuff

    Mooky.
Netflix streaming (online movies - no DVDs) is only $8.99 a month and you can watch all the movies you want for that price (limited by their selection of course). There is also Amazon online streaming but they want everyone to pay $99 a year (no monthly subscription available). Hulu is good for tv series but its also subscription.

Not sure why you don't want to subscribe. If you pay $4 for a movie online you'll be required to give the same personal and credit card info that you would if you subscribe to Netflix or any other online video service.

Really the most reliable places are going to be subscription based. While there are some legally free movies and sites that may host them, that in no way guarantees that the site owners are honest. And while the claim made above is false that 'all sites have viruses' there is always a genuine risk entering a lesser known site.

To prove a point, if someone creates a site to host and stream only legally free movies, then that means a good chance a higher number of visitors will trust the site owners are honest people. So they have immediately set down their defenses. Sounds like a perfect setup for a dishonest person.

Also how can you verify the legality of showing a movie for free? Trust the site owners? We just exposed that folly.

So you can continue going around hoping the places you go only post legal movies. And hoping these small sites don't have dishonest owners, and take risks in both areas, or you can just break down and spend a few dollars a month on sites you know are trustworthy.

Plus, at $4 a pop you'd only get to watch 3 movies before you pay more than for the Netflix/Hulu subscription.

YouTube for me as well! They have a strict rule about only presenting movies that are public domain. As for me, I am a nostalgia fan and do not watch current movies. It's so great to see film noir and classics from the 1920s-1950s as well as old sporting events on YT.

I'd recommend VidAngel for a cheap ($1 per) and legal USA based movie streaming service. They provide filtered movies (you can turn on filters for language, violence, adult content, etc.) that are different from the original, so movies can be streamed legally under "fair use." They are being sued by Disney and might get closed sooner or later, but they are still operating, based in the USA, compliant with US laws, and no malware or ads. Most of their customers are just families that want to filter mature content so their kids can watch the movies.

through the listed sources you can find out if a movie is public domain and can be viewed freely - note that you tube often slices up the movie into ten minute segments so that the presentation can fall within the so called "fair use" doctrine meaning it is intended for educational or informative purposes

Get one of those digital antennas, they have a good one at Heartland for about 26.00 and it should pull in a lot of stations for you for free, it is completely legal and works quiet well, unless you are in the middle of nowhere and 100 miles from anybody!! I think that I get about 18-20 stations, and I subscribe to Netflix, too. There is also Hallmark , but I had trouble bringing it into my tv, and there is a new one out called Pureflix, and I think you can bring some of them in on your computer, and then if you are a teckie, you can hook the computer up to the tv. It really really does beat all the cable charges out there. Oh and you can subscribe to a dvd service only on Netflix if you so choose.
