    Exclamation Office computer!!! Help!!!

This morning, my computer was working fine. When I returned after lunch, it was fine. All of a sudden, it made some random "thinking" noise, and a small screen popped up saying some program had to shut down. I don't remember what program it said. I clicked ok, and all seemed fine.

A few mins later, the same small screen reappeared with the same message. I clicked ok, but then decided to scan my computer. As I was trying to update the anti-virus, the small screen showed up again. This time I decided to reboot.

Well, when the comp came back on, it told me I needed to insert the computer cd because there was a recent change made. I couldn't find the cd. So I tried rebooting again, and now it won't go any further than the following:

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key

I'm too nervous to do anything cuz idk what to expect.

Help? Sorry for any typos. I'm posting from my phone.

Restart it a few times. That usually works for me when my 'puter goes wonky.. lol.. Also try unplugging it and then restart it.

    Hello Melita916,

If push comes to shove, you can try restoring your computer to a previous save point, such as a day before the issue took place in order to get rid of the change. It basically resets your computer to the state that it was in at any given date.

Try removing the battery if it has one or unplug for at least 10 seconds.

Did you reset to a previous save point as I suggested?

Beings you're from Texas, surely you have a boot laying around somewhere. Put it on, kick the computer. If that doesn't work, kick it again. Reboot accomplished .

If you have a search bar on the bottom of the screen type in 'restore' and pick a point that you want your computer to go back to, such as yesterday. The thing is about this, unless your entries for today are saved to a server other than your hard drive you will lose these, such as appointment changes and stuff like that. Just tell your boss and let him worry about it.

I cant do anything to the computer because it wont go beyond the message that says: reboot and select proper boot device...

I've looked up youtube vids to show me what to do, but I can't get anywhere.

Fortunately, his tablet is in sync with the program we use, so im using his tablet for appt and entries. We do have a server.

ask IT so we don't mess up your computer?

is there a (short lived) message saying Press <something> to enter BIOS"?

If there is, you can press whateverbuttonitsays --- it will take you to a scary looking menu ....
somewhere in there is an option for boot device ... just have a quick look and see if it is set to the hard drive, not CD / floppy whatever. If all is OK in that setting, don't change anything (and don't change anything else (!)) , f it is wrong, see if you can change it back to the hard drive of the computer.

When i originally looked at that screen yesterday, it has 1st on the list floppy, then cd, then hardrive group. So i changed the 1st one to hardrive, saved and exit. I restarted the computer, and same thing happened as the 1st time.

I went back to the bios or whatnot, and i looked at the same screen. Right underneath, it said all the devices were NOT installed except the cd drive.

    Idk what to do.

Doing a RESTORE (NOT a RECOVERY !!!!!!!) is your best bet.

    Never ever do a RECOVERY.

If I could get to my desktop screen... lol

Also, when I try the reboot option from the moment the screen turns on, it only gives me the option to use the cd drive (which makes sense cuz bios says its the only one installed.)

It does give me the option to use default settings. Idk if i should use that OR

Go back to bios and enable reboot diagnostic option.

This may help you get to a screen where you can do something.

One of the most common steps when troubleshooting a PC is to boot into safe mode. For a long time this has been achieved by pressing the F8 key, this all changes with Windows 8 and its Automatic Repair mode. But what if we want Safe Mode?

You can still have Safe Mode, however, it is buried deep into the recovery options of Windows 8 or 10. While just mashing the F8 key as we all know will boot you into automatic recovery mode, you can still manually access the recovery options by pressing the Shift+F8 key combination. Even more simple, however, is the option to just hold the SHIFT key and click Restart at the login screen, or even within Windows.

Note: all of this should work exactly the same in Windows 10 as it does in Windows 8.
