Actually the "like" button has nothing to do with reputation. Next to the permalink post number in the upper right corner of every post is a "rep" and "rap" button. The "rep" button is used to add to someone's reputation, the "rap" button is used to report a post to site staff.

IMO the reputation system is somewhat meaningless since many people just don't use it.

Thank you for the correction Oncefallen. Now I know how it works too. :) Let me give you some positive reputation for your post.

"Well... Perhaps they should..." ;)

The 'Rep Power' indicator is supposed to be a reflection of the person's reputation "in the community" - how highly regarded the person is by "the community at large"...

'Rep Points' should be given for any reason whereby you have a "high regard" for the person; however, because they are associated with individual posts - the idea is to "REP" the posts which contain content that you determine to be an illlustration of whatever it is that you believe indicates the person to be "of good reputation"...

It is not simply about whether you like what they said - that is what the 'Like' button is about -- which says:

"I like the general-overall-impression that I get from this post."
or
"There is something in particular about this post that I like."

Sometimes, a person may use the 'Like' button "conservatively" in the sense of "I Really Like" -- in which case, you have:

"I really like the general-overall-impression that I get from this post."
or
"There is something in particular about this post that I really like."

There is a difference between the two ('REP' and 'Like') - and each should be used for the purpose it is intended.

:)

Thank you.

The like button was added recently,and some post are very good,but if the reader

doesn't like the op,i think they might associate the post with the person,instead of

being interested in the post then maybe responding to the post.

i.e., ... :

'Like' => "I like
[the content] in this post."
or
'Like' => "
I like the thought / idea / image / etc. generated in my mind, based on [the content] in this post."

'REP' => "I like who you are (or, appear to be), based on [the content] in this post."
or
'REP' => "
I believe in those characteristics that you seem to exhibit, based on [the content] in this post."

"If both apply, then give 'em 'REP' and 'Like' it too!" :D

:)

Can somebody tell me how many rep points equals a rep power? I have 20 rep points, and my rep power is still zero.

It means no one has actually given you rep. I think 1 is just a default.
People don't use Rep much anymore, especially since 'like' was added. Someone as new as you is not too likely to have rep added yet.

I understand wanting to show standing in the community, but this sounds more like an popularity thing. Standing in the community should be decided by community leadership.

I imagine that was the original intent. Unfortunately, the "Like" button floated into the mix, and has all but overthrown the rep button, either way. :(

It seems like a popularity contest to me. If you tell people what they want to hear, it seems to me you will have a better repuation than if you tell people what you think they NEED to hear.

This is CC. A collection of some of the most opinionated people on earth, hahaha. I don't see a lot of 'telling people what they want to hear' going on here. ( ;

I am glad we have the like button for a particular informative or helpful post. Rep button ---> popularity button (who cares if you are or not popular)

What is the difference between reputation points and reputation power?

You are not able to know who thinks you are a good person?

If someone puts me on the rap sheet(hahaha that sounds so hilarious coming from me, like I am in jail or something) anyways, if they do this does this also show up and if so where at? Or does it just go to the admin and they will contact me?

I know I ask a lot but it would be nice to know..

Thanks!:)
