Is there a time frame on when a poster can edit or delete a post? I wanted to edit a post I made tonight, like maybe half an hour ago or so, and there is no edit or delete place to be seen?

After i just typed for help on it, i could see an edit/delete.

If there is a few minutes time frame, can that be changed?

You have 5 minutes to edit or delete.

:)

And that is five minutes total. Even if you still decide to edit your post within the five minute parameter you have to finish the edit within five minutes of when you posted. Keeping the edited post open longer than that does not allow more time to edit.
No, there is no other way to edit a post. Moderators will not make changes to your post, or grant you a chance to. The only way Mods will edit a post is in the even of someone breaking a rule. They also will not delete a post for you, nor is there any way for you to delete a post at all.

Dude... you can delete posts for 5 minutes after you've posted them... and a bit longer, too, if you've kept the edit window open. I do it all the time.

But yes, you can only edit them for 5 minutes after posting. Keeping the window open doesn't help with edits.

Best thing to do is always make sure you really want to post it!

pop click in case you are not able to edit the post. copying and pasting the post might help. be sure to edit the post. or if it is a possibility to quote your own post and put a disclaimer or something....just my thoughts....if that helps

I once saw a post where a young lady asked if the post that she'd just made could please be removed. I told a mod, and he kindly removed it. It was a post in which she said more about herself than she would have liked to, had she thought about it more carefully (English wasn't her first language, either). It seems to depend on WHY one wants to remove a post, and several other factors also.

Why is there a five minute limit? I have never heard of such a thing on any kind of board.

It is a rarity that we edit posts for reason other than violation of posting policy. If we did people would be hounding site staff non-stop to edit posts.

The reason for the editing time limit is that frequently in a highly active thread multiple replies can be made to a post in a short time frame. Editing or deleting posts after replies have been made to it can tend to mess up the context of subsequent posts. Likewise people have been known to make inflammatory posts and edit them later to make it appear that the person who replied to it was being a jerk.

Well let's say person A, posts a really insulting. personal attack against person B. Person B reports it. Person A catches wind of said report.

Well if person A could go in and edit said post, well it would make keeping personal attacks off of the board kinda difficult.

There is a method to our apparent madness.

Once. Exactly. I've seen Mods refuse to edit or remove lots of post, and repeatedly explain that it is something they don't do.

It has to be a really unique circumstance, otherwise that's what we'd spend a ton of time doing.

But not if you simply permitted people to edit their posts any time they wished like many other forums which do not have a time limit on editing one's own posts.

Reasons for this have been given in this thread already.

I appear to have inadvertently made more work for the mods be causing them to have to explain why they do not normally do something. I apologize, Jim and Stilly. In the one case I referenced, all the moderator did was remove the entire thread, as the young lady started the thread asking for advice about a boy she liked and a few minutes later posted that she wished she hadn't made that thread and was there anything that could be done about it. I totally agree that normally one should just learn his/her lesson and be more careful when posting the next time; the mods don't have time to edit things. I agree that the 5 minute limit is probably the best way to keep the site moderated, though I had always assumed that the mods could see what people had posted before they edited the post anyway, thus keeping rude things down. Oops! I'll try not to assume things anymore :).

One more thought, too....since one can always read his or her post before posting it, the editing option could be removed altogether. If I'm not sure something is the right thing to say I generally copy it (often PM'ing it to myself) and think about it for while.

since you only have 5 minutes to edit your thread, you should preview your thread before submitting it.

Not long enough at all...the time limit should be lifted altogether I reckon, don't really see any need for it!
