John 8:1-11
The Woman Caught in Adultery
“Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.”
Although the scribes and Pharisees witnessed many works done by Jesus, they did not believe that he was the Son of God. So when they caught a woman in the very act of adultery and decided to use her to test Jesus. "Hey, let's take her over to Jesus and see what he will say about her. If he says to not stoned her, then he would be going against the law. And if he says to stone her, then he would be lying because he said that he loves sinners." Inside of the heart of the woman caught in adultery was full of hopelessness, despair and fear. People shouted at her, “You dirty woman!”, "You defile our village!", kicking her and condemning her as she was being dragged through the streets to be stoned to death. What about the hearts of those with stones in their hands? They thought that she was so dirty, dirty enough to be stoned to her death, hearts full of hate, thinking they are better than her because they were not the one caught in committing adultery. The scribes and Pharisees thought that they surely snared Jesus into a trap. However, no one expected the answer that Jesus gave to them. “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” Then, those who held stones in their hands dropped the stones convicted by their conscience that they too were guilty of sin just as the woman caught in adultery and all walked away. After they had all left, only Jesus and the woman remained. Inside of the woman’s heart, after Jesus saved her, was no longer filled with hopelessness, despair and fear. According to the law, anyone caught committing adultery was to be stoned to death. There was nothing she could say or do to save herself in any way. Then, Jesus asked her, "Where are your accusers?" As she looked around, it was only her and Jesus was left. She replied, "No one Lord." Then, Jesus sent her away. Now her heart of full of happiness, joy and overflowing with thankfulness. Light had entered into her heart, the true light, the powerful light of Jesus and that darkness that was in her heart could not reside any longer. In the same way, when Jesus enters into our hearts, no matter who we are, what we're like or however we have lived up until now, we change. If we adjust our hearts towards Jesus just a little bit, Jesus will work to fill our hearts with hope, happiness and peace in this life and in the eternal life to come. Just as the woman caught in adultery was saved completely by 100% grace, we are also saved in the exact same way.
Romans 4:5
But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
When we see ourselves, we are no where near perfect. When we see ourselves, we sin everyday. When we see ourselves, we could never say that we are righteous. However, when we accept the Word of God into our hearts just as it is written, we can boldly stand before God sanctified, righteous and perfect.
Hebrews 10:14
For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
Jesus offered himself up for us, because of our lawless deeds and our iniquities, to save us from our sins and to wash us of our sins whiter than the snow. This is the heart that God has towards us and the love He has for us. When we accept the Word of God just as it is, we start to understand the heart of God. Then, our hearts will overflow with thankfulness to God just like the heart of the woman caught in adultery after she met Jesus.
