What does it mean to abide in Christ (the vine)?
The definition of what it means to abide is here:

John 15 [SUP]10 [/SUP]If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
2 John 1v9 [SUP]9 [/SUP]Whoever transgresses[SUP][d][/SUP] and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.

John 15

1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. [SUP]2 [/SUP]Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away;[SUP][a][/SUP] and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

  • This is the fruit of the Spirit, namely: Galatians 5 [SUP]22 [/SUP]But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [SUP]23 [/SUP]gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. [SUP]24 [/SUP]And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
  • Without Christ, we have not the Spirit. Romans 8v9 [SUP]9 [/SUP]But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
  • So in order to live by the Spirit (producing fruit, which is of God), we are to obey Christ’s doctrine (abiding in Him). And here is the proof in the next verses.
[SUP]
3 [/SUP]You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. [SUP]4 [/SUP]Abide in Me <keep My commandments>, and I in you <the Word of God in us: see verse 7 below>. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me <keep My commandments>.

  • No fruit can be produced unless you are obedient to the doctrine of Christ.
  • The Fruit of the Spirit is the outcome of Obedience to Christ (all His Words, His Doctrine: see 2 john 1v9 above)
[SUP]
5 [/SUP]“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. [SUP]6 [/SUP]If anyone does not abide in Me <keep His commandments>, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

  • Continued disobedience (living in willful sin) results in condemnation.

[SUP]7 [/SUP]If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will[SUP][b][/SUP] ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. [SUP]8 [/SUP]By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

  • The ultimate objective is the bearing of fruit to the glory of God the Father. It is the character of godliness formed in you (Fruit of the Spirit).
  • Which is not possible without your obedience (abiding in Him)
  • Your disobedience = No Fruit Possible.
  • No fruit = Branch cut off
[SUP]
9 [/SUP]“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. [SUP]10 [/SUP]If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
-herein above ^^^ lies the definition of abiding in Him.
[SUP]
11 [/SUP]“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. [SUP]12 [/SUP]This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. [SUP]13 [/SUP]Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. [SUP]14 [/SUP]You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.

  • Jesus laid down His life for His friends v13
  • Jesus calls us His friends if we obey his commands v14 (to love one another)
  • Those who disobey His commands are not His friends v14
  • Therefore those who disobey His commands do not partake of Christ’s death on the cross v13 and v14. They haven’t died to self. Their old man is not identified with Christ on the cross.

[SUP]15 [/SUP]No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. [SUP]16 [/SUP]You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. [SUP]17 [/SUP]These things I command you, that you love one another.

  • In the above verses 15 to 17 we have:
  • Election (verse 16)
  • Obedience (verse 17) – that’s your part by the way.
  • Fruit bearing (verse 16) – Christ's nature being formed in you (Galatians 4v19). God does this part if you will honour your part in obedience. Abide in the vine and the fruit will come.

What Does it Mean to Abide in Christ?

union with Christ means being obedient to Him. Abiding involves our response to the teaching of Jesus: “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you …” (John 15:7a). Paul echoes this idea in Colossians 3:16, where he writes, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,” a statement closely related to his parallel exhortation in Ephesians 5:18: “be filled with the Spirit.”

In a nutshell, abiding in Christ means allowing His Word to fill our minds, direct our wills, and transform our affections. In other words, our relationship to Christ is intimately connected to what we do with our Bibles! Then, of course, as Christ’s Word dwells in us and the Spirit fills us, we will begin to pray in a way consistent with the will of God

Simply

One with Him. He in me, I in Him...living out of Spirit that is primary in my triune being. Not my human nature.

Speaking His words when I hear; doing His acts when I see. Just like He did.

Its both fruit and works of our being in Him.

John 15

I clicked on the link to the footnote (highlighted in red above), and the footnote indicates that the words translated "takes away" should read "lifts up".

The words "He takes away" are translated from the Greek word airó which means to raise, lift up.

The Father, as Vinedresser, tenderly cares for all branches in the Vine. And those branches which need a little extra support in order to bear fruit, the Vinedresser lifts up and provides what is needed in the life of the branch in order to bring forth that fruit.

The Vine provides the sap which runs through the branch and the Vine produces the fruit which the branch holds out for all to see and partake of.

He is with us in the struggle; He is with us in the calm; He is with us in the joy; He is with us in those moments when we feel as if we stand alone in an ocean of unbelief.

And, by the way, the commandment Jesus Christ tells us to keep in found in verse 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.

Inasmuch as it is the Vine Who produces within the branch this love wherewith the branches are to love one another, how can we not keep His commandments? The Vine gives us the means; the Father provides us the support and protection we need in order to love one another. We abide in the love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. How difficult is it to hold out that love which flows from Jesus (the Vine) into us (the branch)?

Faith has a lot to do with "abiding" in Him.

I must believe without a doubt that He is with me even when I do not feel it.
I must believe that He loves me unconditionally even when I blow it.
I must believe that His goodness and mercy is poured out upon me every day of my life even during trials and illness.
I must believe in the ongoing work upon my life by the Holy Spirit.

And to firmly believe these things, I must stay (abide)in the Word daily.

This above is a fraudulent eisegesis mess. Yes, a total fraud.

That's why no one should believe the greasy grace they teach, because of the consistant fraudulent statements that are used to confirm it.

If it were true, then they wouldn't need to use such deceit.

The text does not say "continual."

An individual either abides in the love of God or they don't. One cannot do both.

Faith works by love and love works no ill.

Hi Skinski, how are you?

Here is a verse referring to "continue" in sin.

Romans 6
6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? [SUP]2 [/SUP]Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?

Thoughts?

Growth in the Christian walk is in grace and knowledge. We grow to a maturity and unity of tge faith.

Willful sin is out of the question. If we have died with Christ we have died to serving sin. Anyone still serving sin has not died with Christ and is therefore not set free from such service.

Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

See how Paul states "should not serve sin" and associates a death with "freed from sin."

Likewise a frw verses later we read...

Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Rom 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

We are slaves to whom we obey.

Freedom from sin results from obedience from the heart to the doctrine of Christ.

A real Christian "was" a servant of sin, not anymore, now they are a servant of righteousness.

The text is very clear.

Paul is simply emphasing the truth that if an individual has truly died to sin then they can no longer live in sin.

It is in repentance that we die to rebellion, die to sin service.

Pretty simple stuff.

The old wine skin has to be discarded. The old man must die.

He that loses His life shall save it.

Jesus spoke within contexts that people could understand at that time and with some research we can understand the analogies that He used.

It is true that branches are lifted up, I watched my father do this many times as a child, when we grew grapes or other fruits.

Jesus is indicating what actually occurred during the Spring, certain non-fruiting branches were "lifted up": (to keep them from touching the ground and setting roots) and tied to trellises along with the fruiting branches while the side shoots of the fruiting branches were being "cleaned up."

The non-fruiting branches were allowed to grow with full vigor and without the removal of any side growth or leaves since the more extensive their growth the greater diameter of their stem where it connected to the vine and thus the greater ability for the flow of nutrients from the roots to the branches which would produce more fruit the following season.

By removing them from the ground and placing them on the trellis the rows of plants would benefit from unhindered aeration which is considered to be an essential element to proper fruit development.

To see airei as removal (judgment or discipline) is to contradict the actual practice of the time.

Just curious, why did you underline the part about those that don't keep HIS commandments will be burned? If they get saved, their spirit Is sealed and Incorruptible.

Are you saying,a person has to keep his commandments after they get saved In order to stay saved,as In born again again?

Not that they will do that anyway because they ARE a new creature and old things are passed away and we are GOD's workmanship.

Salvation Is GOD's workmanship and we can't affect that, but a person will seek to purify himself even as he Is pure.:)

If you don't like it, take it up with the editors of the New King James Version of the Bible who added the footnote.

Of course, you really should go back to the Greek and deal with whoever used the word airó (which means to raise, take up, lift).

Although if you do that, you may just find yourself fighting against God ... as 2 Peter 1:21 tells us that holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

New International Version
He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

New Living Translation
He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.

English Standard Version

New American Standard Bible
"Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit,

It doesn't matter which version you read, all of the red/bolded words shown above are translated from the same Greek word airó, which means to raise, take up, lift.
