A church I attended years ago preached that they would love all to embrace each other when greeting but did not encourage it because too many carnal people with ulterior motives.
I had a huge problem with man hugs.

I don't think we should feel obliged to hug/kiss anyone if it makes us uncomfortable. Boundaries, people. If I know you well, a hug is an appropriate way to say hello. A kiss, to me, is far more intimate and not to be given as freely as a hug. For everyone else, you can have a handshake. There are many great ways of expressing our hospitality and love that don't have to involve hugs and kisses at first contact.

I am a big fan of what I like to call the "Monk Hug." Basically, you place your hands on the sides of someone's shoulders and sort of lean in so that the side of your head moves toward the other person's right shoulder, and they do they same. I call it the Monk Hug, because that's basically the same way I've always been hugged by monks and seen monks hug others. I think it comes from the old monastic greeting where monks would embrace and touch their tonsure to the other's tonsure. It's just as personal as a normal hug but not as awkward, and can be done much more quickly. I like monk hugs :)
you just described a Detective Adrian Monk hug.

The Monk Hug! I love it, especially since I am a fan of Monk and it would be something that he would approve of. I will have to introduce it in church. lol.

I have serious boundary issues because of my past and the worst part of church is the hugging/handshake part. I do not mind talking to and greeting people but I do not like to be touched at all, especially without advanced warning, knowing the person very well, and knowing why i have to touch them.

Lol, oh. It doesn't have anything to do with the show. The monks I have been blessed to know have greatly effected how I do just about everything, even right down to hugging. Haha. Love those guys!

I have no problem with hugs—offer them myself, once in a great while. I don’t kiss.

We are to be love. Some of us weren't raised with a lot of affection shown to us. We need to get over it and be like God says for us to be. Some people are still raised kissing, even the men kissing the cheeks of other men. Most aren't. Hugs aren't that big a deal are they? Lets get over it and show love. Sometimes we don't realize what horrible things other people are going thr and a hug can make them feel a little love.

Its ok Debbie, you'll warm them with your sunshine. Noticed your signature. On my bulletin board is a poem my aunt gave me 15 years ago:

My Anchor Holds
To see the rushing billows come, The peaceful shore invade, to see the whitecaps break & roll & still not be afraid.
To feel the power of the waves Pull and tear asunder, To take one's stand upon the Rock and never be pulled under.
To feel the trap of backwash wrath, endure a little longer, To know that overcoming makes the spirit that much stronger.
Come, life's billows, waves & storms, Your turbulence cant shake me, For deep within my Anchor Holds, And HE will not forsake me.
Viola Jacobson Berg.
