This thread is dedicated to lifting up the "least" of the gifts; but sometimes the least can be great***I will share the benefits of speaking in tongues from 40 years of experience***I have been involved in all faiths***my first Church was Billy Graham's church in Western Springs, Illinois***He was pastor of that Church in 1943, but I actually attended it in 1975 when I was first saved***PURPOSE----My purpose is not to engender strife and arguments about tongues, so if you don't like, believe, or practice tongues this is not for you; but if you are Spirit Filled and can speak in tongues I want to encourage you with what I have learned***My first benefit I would like to share is the healing that comes from speaking in tongues***as a new Christian I was messed up from drugs***I tried to be like George Harrison and take 800 acid trips; my girlfriend's sister took 400 acid trips***I only got to 200 but it did have a negative affect on my life and thinking***my pastor and I would pray in tongues for up to 5 hours a day***this sounds extreme but it brought healing along with God's Word and the love of the small congregation...

I dont believe in a 2 class christianity.
I don't either. But, it's not a matter of class...but faith. If you want it? God will give it.

Why not? Fear? You think the devil will sneak in when we are asking God for His gifts? He's not that powerful.

HE gives gifts according to HIS PURPOSE for the building up of HIS BODY

....not our own

this appears to me to be glorifying the gifts rather than THE GIVER of gifts

Again.... according to and for HIS PURPOSE and GLORY

And this is your judgement.

He gives the gifts for ministering to others except for the one which is personal...and that is our prayer language of the Spirit...which we are now...no longer flesh but Spirit.

How is it I heard HIS VOICE from the beginning when HE revealed the TRUTH of THE GOSPEL that I now need to be able to speak and pray in tongues in order to keep hearing HIM?

Ephesians 4

gifts are given for the building up (edification) of HIS BODY

Thats why if you speak in tongues but can not interpret what is being said, it is to your own personal edification

what is the point of exalting this gift if what is being said is not understandable

thats why Paul said if one speaks in tongues and there is no one to interpret what is being said, don't speak in tongues

it is t to anyone else's edification

and if an unbeliever were to come in they won't even be able to understand

Sad thing for all believers which not got the gift of speaking in tongues. You made an experience but what finally was the Key for the healing? Long prayer? Singing and praying in tongues? It was the Lords Mercedes because he saw your heart.
According your experience all christians which have not the gift of speaking in tongues are 2nd class christians, because they never can experience what you did.
And bible says clear that not all christians will get the gift of speaking in tongues. I dont believe in a 2 class christianity.
You're such a cynic!

Anyone who speaks in tongues can not interpret that tongue, these are two different gifts, a speaker of tongues needs a interpreter flat out, anyone who says they can interpret as well as speak tongues is false.

To speak or to pray to God without understanding is not a Christian endeavor. There is no edification without understanding. The Holy Spirit ministers understanding to us when we are troubled that we might be comforted and have the peace that God provides.

1 Corinthians 14 the first 24 verses makes this abundantly clear.

1 Cor 14:6 ¶ Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

I completely agree with speaking to or praying to God, the question is should it be uttered infront of others?

There is a misunderstanding about the gift of speaking in tongues***there are 9 gifts of the Spirit which includes speaking in tongues, but for the purpose of interpretation which is equal to prophecy***I have experienced all three of these gifts over 40 years***but when we receive the Holy Spirit like the disciples did on the day of Pentecost this is not one of the 9 gifts***rather when we are empowered by the Spirit we also receive tongues with it***if you check the Book of Acts every time a believer received the Holy Spirit they spoke in tongues***an example is when the Gospel was brought to the Gentiles by Peter (Acts 10)***I believe all believers can receive the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues***the only person who I saw who did not receive the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues is a man who constantly argued that all do not speak in tongues and he never did***

Ten Scriptural Reasons to Speak in Tongues

1. God Speaks to us Through Tongues: "For with stammering lips and another tongue will He speak to this people ..." (Isaiah 28:11-12 and 1 Corinthians 14:21 ).

2. We Speak to God: "For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not to man, but to God" (1 Corinthians 14:2 ).

3. In the Spirit we Speak Mysteries ("secrets between friends; what is known only to the initiated"): "For he that speaks in an unknown tongue ... speaks unto God ... in the Spirit he speaks mysteries" (1 Corinthians 14:2 ).

4. We Edify ("build up") Ourselves: "He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself" (1Corinthians 14:4 and Jude 20 ).

5. Tongues and Interpretation are Gifts of The Holy Spirit: "To another many kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues" (1 Corinthians 12:10 ).

The nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 are given to unite and build up the Church via the individuals who exercise (or manifest) them in the love of Jesus. These two gifts are specific gifts which not every Spirit-filled believer exercises, while general speaking in tongues is for all. "I would that you all spake with tongues" (1 Corinthians 14:5 ).

6. Tongues is our Spirit Praying: "For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays" (1 Corinthians 14:14 ).

7. Tongues are for Speaking, Praying and Singing unto God: "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also ..." (1 Corinthians 14:15-17 ).

8. Tongues are to Bless ("to speak well of, praise, as men toward God") and Give Thanks to God: "Else when you shall bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupies the room of the unlearned ("one who has no professional knowledge" - of the Spirit; has not been initiated or sealed - Ephesians 1:13 )say Amen at your giving of thanks, seeing he understands not what you are saying" (1 Corinthians 14:16-17 ).

9. Tongues are for a Sign to Unbelievers: "Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not" (1 Corinthians 14:22 ).

10. Tongues are for All to Benefit Spiritually: "I would that you all spake with tongues ... I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all ... Wherefore, brethren ... forbid not to speak with tongues" (1 Corinthians 14:5 , 18, 39).

@BeyondET

Yes, there is such a thing - it's produced the same way as speaking, only you're singing. Really makes no difference whether spoken or sung - the glossolalia is all one in the same.

The one interesting thing about singing in glossolalia from a musical standpoint is that the melody (as far as I know) cannot come first and the "lyrics" sung to match the tune; the melody almost has to come as spontaneously as the T-speech. i.e. you can't write down the lyrics and then come up with a melody.

Essentially you're just making up the melody as you go along.

Some songs will be, I hesitate to use the term with respect to T-speech but, macaronic; the main verses and song written in English (or the speaker's native language) with a few of the verses to be sung in T-speech. It's interesting to see how people manipulate the T-speech to fit the melody in those cases.

1 Samuel 30 says David encouraged himself in the Lord. Now David was probably not speaking in tongues, but he was edifying himself because his men wanted to kill him over the severe loss they took at Ziklag.

I think anyone like you that says we should not edify ourselves is talking doctrine but not Biblical truth.

Thats no matter of fear ore faith. To say that every believer can have the gift of speaking in tongues is simply not true! Its true that every believer is getting a gift for to build up His body.

No I am not cynic; but I not agree with false teachIng. And to teach that every christian can have the gift of speaking in tongues is in my eyes false teaching.Which leads people to a wrong expection. Is the same what some teaches about healing.
