You don't need many translations to do that. But if you are willing to truly hear from God, you can be confident that the Holy Spirit will guide you in your studies. Many times, what you see here is two people seeing two different facets of the same truth. Occasionally you will see someone who is just stubborn. (Please, Lord, let it not be me. lol)

*lol's* I hear ya. Very true, but I also see the point of the different translations as well....we're all ''stubborn'' or ''firm'' or ''set'' or ''founded'' or whatever you want to call it, in our beliefs.

Trouble is.. many christians have their own private interpretation of scripture and think it is right. Some take a verse and remove it from the chapter and context it is in and then say it means something it doesn't.

Like 'where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am with them'.. gets taken to mean Jesus will dwell with two or three christians whatever they are doing.. but there are some things about the verses surrounding the verse that change the context and meaning..

1- The previous verses are about resolving disputes between sinning congregation members
2- The two or three people comes from the Old Testament process for witnesses establishing the truth of a situation.. from Deuteronomy
3- The context is also about christians in agreement..

So it becomes about the process for conflict resolution in a church family.

The point is.. you have to compare scripture with scripture to get the real meaning..

another example is Jesus saying 'The Father is greater than I'

He isn't actually saying the Father is a superior being.. but when you read the context you can see He is talking about returning to His rightful position at the right hand of the Father..

Jesus is limited in that human body when talking to the disciples.. but is saying He will be in His full God form without limits when He ascends.

So 'the Father is greater than I' becomes 'the Father is in a greater position at the moment.. but I will be with Him and be in my rightful position'

Anything is possible, and some versions of the Bible might be better than others. Still, I would think the Lord takes some responsibility in making sure we all have access to the truth. I received a Bible from my church when I was a boy, the (Old) Revised Standard Version, and I trust that Bible.

IM SEEING A CLEAR MIS-CONCEPTION BEING FORMED HERE

TAKE ANY BOOK OF THE BIBLE (66 BOOKS)
CHOOSE 1 SELECT CHAPTER
READ IT AND THINK ABOUT WHAT THE WORDS ARE SAYING
NOW
GO PRAY AND SEEK GOD FOR 3 DAYS (WHICH WE SHOULD BE DOING EVERY DAY)
GO BACK AND REREAD THAT BOOK AND CHAPTER AGAIN
SEE IF SOMETHING NEW HAS NOT BEEN REVEALED TO YOU
BETTER YET
SEEK GOD IN PRAYER AND FAST FOR 2 WEEKS
GO BACK AND REREAD THAT SAME BOOK AND CHAPTER AGAIN
I GUARANTEE YOU WILL FIND SOMETHING NEW ABOUT WHAT WAS BEING SAID

WHY?
THE WORD OF GOD IS ALIVE
THE GROWTH IN REVELATION IS ENDLESS AS YOU GROW IN GOD

FOR ANYONE TO MAKE A STATEMENT
THERE ARE ONLY 2 MEANINGS AND ONE IS RIGHT AND THE OTHER IS JUST BEING PIG-HEADED
REVEALS MUCH ABOUT THE LIMITATION AND GROWTH IN GOD FOR THAT INDIVIDUAL

GOD IS THE SAME YESTERDAY - TODAY - TOMORROW
BUT JESUS TOLD US
HEAVEN AND EARTH SHALL PASS AWAY BUT MY WORD WILL NEVER
THE WORDS OF GOD HAVE LIFE AND THOSE WHO GROW IN GOD WILL RECEIVE THESE REVELATIONS
IF
YOU SEE THE BIBLE AS BLACK INK ON WHITE PAPER
YOU WILL NEVER GROW AND AMOUNT TO MUCH IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
BECAUSE
WORDS HAVE MORE THAN 1 MEANING
AND YOU WILL BE CONFOUNDED AND NEVER GROW IN GOD
IF YOU ASSUME WHAT YOUR READING IS BOTTOM LINE INTERPRETATION AT ITS FULLEST
YOU NEED TO SEEK GOD
BECAUSE
THOSE WORDS WILL BECOME ABUNDANT LIFE

JUST THINK
IF YOU APPROACHED ALL 66 BOOKS AND CHAPTERS IN FASTING AND PRAYER
YOU JUST MIGHT
HAVE THE SLIGHTEST INCLINATION WHAT GOD IS TRYING TO REVEAL
FOR NONE OF US WILL EVER REALLY COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND AND KNOW

Perhaps sometimes we concentrate on certain portions of the Bible, while forgetting about other areas.

1co 5:6Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a LITTLE LEAVEN leaveneth the whole lump?Ga 5:9A LITTLE LEAVEN leaveneth the whole lump.

leaven, yeast was consider unclean/ corrupt, so yes the bible say that a alittle corruption can corrupt the whole thing!!! wow I would have thought that they would had left this verse out but no there it is

1 Corinthians 5:6 (New International Version)

6Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough?

so if the the word, the spiritual bread from above has a little corruption it works through the whole Bread, the Whole word

Why do some of us seem to hold a higher standard of scripture than God? I've been in countless discussions with countless reformed brothers and sisters who will preach that Christians must hold a literal, scientifically complete, historically accurate and ultimately authoritative view of the Bible, while often (strangely enough) holding a low view of God's character, even by scriptural standards.

Remember, no matter how great scripture is - it is made up of words, which by their very nature are reductionist! The implications of this fact is that even the most accurate and inspired text can only communicate a mere shadow of a person's character, let alone God's character. Therefore, it would seem that limiting God's character to words is a human attempt to control our understanding of Him and His will for us. We need to stop our obsession of worshiping scripture and start living God's will for our lives by loving and serving others, rather than using all our energy making sure we have perfected a Calvinist or Catholic interpretation of scripture. Using scripture to prove some aspect of God can lead to hairsplitting in the extreme - 'Paul really meant blah, blah, blah, based on his use of this Greek word, which is found nowhere else in scripture!!!!!!! It is a meaningless exercise, people.

I wouldn't be surprised if I find a few of them arguing with God if they discovered that His character didn't appear to fit their narrow view of the scriptures.

The Bible doesn't contradict itself, God doesn't contradict Himself. If you find things in the Bible that seem to contradict God's Words then you understand it wrong. People who are led by pride and ambition many times will color the scriptures using the mind of men and find things the unenlightened ones don't. If it has appeal and ministers to the prideful human nature of others it sometimes catches on. (I suppose like the fruit in Eden)

The major problems I have seen with scriptural interpretation are the following:

1. many passages are taken out of context with the setting
2. passages are overcomplicated or twisted to emphasize a point, when the simple and obvious interpretation is the correct one
3. a passage must be in harmony with any idioms that it contains, in other words sayings that had meanings at the time of writing that have gone out of style and no longer have the same meaning. Many of the newer translations do a much better job of correctly translating these idiomatic sayings than older versions such as the KJV

Another major problem is the one summed up in the following from How to Understand The Bible, by W. Robert Palmer, (College Press Publishing, 1995, pp. 69-70).

For a full understanding of the Bible, all passages on any subject must be studied. Truth has many sides. Each passage, though true, does not always give all the truth. And usually a passage has a particular design of presenting clearly one facet of truth or of combating some significant extreme people are susceptible to. No one should ever draw a general conclusion on any Bible subject until all passages concerning it have been collected, considered, and compared.

We think of no better illustration of this than the subject of conversion. In pointing out the steps of salvation that a sinner must take, such passages on faith as John 3:16 and Acts 16:31 have been emphasized by some. On the other hand, such verses on repentence as Luke 13:3, Acts 2:38, and Acts 17:30; on confession of faith as Matthew 10:32 and Romans 10:9,10; and on baptism as Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38, and Acts 22:16 have been put aside. Only the sum total of passages on a given subject will give complete understanding.
