I was talking to my friend who used to be a Christian. He knows the Bible well and he asked me what Christ's last words were and I said it is finished and he said one gospel said that but Luke said it was into thy hands i commit thee. He said that's the kind of contradictions he can't stand. I couldn't explain it. Can anyone help me for our next conversation about that? ARe there contradictions? I'm not doubting the Scripture I"m sure there's an explanation.

Luke heard one thing and another heard Him say something else, not a contridiction, just different versions of the very same story by two different men who were standin close by the cross at different times...probably...

Hi forgiveandloved.

This seems to be problematic, but when you take into account that the evangelists did not write down every detail, but where pointing out the truth of Christs ministry and work we can see why this is not as problimatic as first seems.

it would seem as though Jesus would have said something along the lines of:

Father into your hands I commit my Spirit... it is finished.

These seemingly problematic issues within the (particularly Matt,Mark & Luke)gospels usually have an easy answer. the main problem is that people think that the gospels say every thing and give every detail, but each author is showing a different side of the coin.

I'll give you an example.

4 friends went to a football match, each standing at a different side of the pitch. now take them later after the game and ask them to do a review of the match.. what do you get?

you will have 4 reviews showing different aspects of the game, some points will be omitted by one and added by another, even when 2 are talking about the same point in the match they may not use the whole point and putting both together you get the real point.

Hope that has helped.

kind regards

Phil

How can different versions of the same story hear two different things?

It shows that none of the authors of the gospels actually heard what came out of Christ's mouth for themself. What Christ said was passed down via word of mouth from person to person and by the time the guy wrote the gospel story, there were at least two versions circulating around in christianity. The author of one gospel chose one version, and the other gospel author chose the other.

[FONT=&quot]I have to agree with the others, it's not a contradiction at all, it's from different perspectives, you have to keep in mind that four different men wrote the gospels (John, Matthew, Luke, and Mark). If you were to compare class notes among four different people, would any of them be the same? Only one of the men that wrote one of the four gospels were at the crucifixion, and that was the disciple whom Christ loved, John (John 19:25-27). As for the other three authors, they wrote through what they heard from the word of mouth.

If your friend really knows scripture all that well, show him Matthew 1:1-17, and then Luke 3:23-38. At first glance, they appear to be totally different, and that’s because… they are, but it's not that they contradict. Luke 3:23-38 is the Davidic genealogy of Christ's mother, Mary, and Matthew 1:1-17 is the Davidic genealogy of Joseph. With that in mind, you won’t find Mary listed, or any other female for that matter, listed throughout the genealogies, simply because the name of females were not permitted to be listed in the genealogical tables. With that said, Christ was still from the line of David, as prophecy foretold, but you have to first understand that David had several children (1 Chronicles 3:1-10), two of which that are key in these genealogies: Solomon, and Nathan (1 Chronicles 3:5). It was through the line of Solomon that Joseph was born, and it was through the line of Nathan that Mary was born, both being born through the line of David.

That was one aspect that really tested my faith, apparent contradictions. But after careful research, which I'm sure your friend is undertaking now, (satan will attack and mislead us by what we read when we research the truth). But if I am permitted, here is a website that I go back to every now and then.
