I get the impression that is all David used to kill the very things that tried to eat his herd from before. He was a shepherd's boy & not used to armor and such. remember when Saul tried to get David to wear his own armor and david turned him down? but don't forget, after David used the sling and stone, he cut off goliath's head.

Why did David use a stone and a slingshot?
Symbolic reasons.

Daniel 2:45This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands—arock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. “The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

The reason David did not use Saul's armor was because he had not tested it, in other words he was not used to wearing armor other than his own, as this verse implies:
1Sa 17:38 So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail.
1Sa 17:39 David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, "I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them." So David took them off.

David was by no means just a Shepard boy:
1Sa 16:18 Then one of the servants answered and said, "Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the LORD is with him."

David slew Goliath with a stone because scripture says to stone anyone who blasphemes the Living God.
Leviticus24:16
Andhe that blasphemeth the name of the Lord,he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregationshallcertainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in theland, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put todeath.

1Kings 21:10
Andset two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blasphemeGod and the king. And then carry himout, and stone him, that he may die.

1Kings 21:13
Andthere came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: andthe men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in thepresence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme Godand the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stonedhim with stones, that he died.

Sam 17 and especially :26 shows that Goliath blasphemed...spoke against the Lord.
26 Then David spoke to the men who were standing by him, saying, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?” 27 The people [m]answered him in accord with this word, saying, “Thus it will be done for the man who kills him.”

I just learned this yesterday and was wondering if anyone else knew about it.

1Sa 17:38 So Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail.

My bad dude. I always got the impression that he was just shepherd's boy because of verse

1Sa 16:11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
and

1Sa 17:33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
1Sa 17:34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
1Sa 17:35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
1Sa 17:36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
1Sa 17:37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

but then I see what you said about proving them in the next verses...

1Sa 17:39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
thanks dude, my bad.

It was like the first projectile weapon ever made ( short of throwing your spears or daggers ) not to mention easy to make, and use, it was like 2 ropes, a leather holster, than all you need to do is find a rock- simplest weapon you can use with the exception of a stick.
Slings aren't a joke, you can launch a fist sized rock extremely fast at something.

It's just a mistake most people make that they assume he was just a boy, he was young but not that young:)

If David was so skilled with a sling,, why did he take 5 smooth stones from the brook? Did he think he might miss a couple times? Lol,,, hey, it's a trick question. But, there is a good reason why David took 5 stones. Do you know?
