Hi OneFaith., I understand why you say that. I was taught that Paul's thorn in the flesh was always a physical sickness having something to do maybe with his eyes or some other awful pain his body would not allow him to forget. But that is not what that "thorn in the flesh" refers to.
If you check out in the Bible the phrase "thorn in the flesh" it is always referring to either satan or annoying people. Like today we say someone is a pain in the butt. Also., Paul clearly said an angel from satan was sent to him not an angel from God. God doesn't send us sickness and death. He sent Jesus and He had the victory over sin and death. Jesus has overcome those things. The Bible says clearly that satan is one who comes to -kill -steal -destroy. Jesus came to give us life and that more abundantly. These truths are Biblical.
Paul had the Judeizers (sp) following him around allll the time back then. He would preach about the grace of God in Christ and those religious Jews who believed in the law to make a person right with God.,they would come in and preach the law to the people just as soon as Paul left. Seeking to put that yoke of bondage on the church yet again.
They were literally a thorn in Paul's side and even though he prayed many times to be relieved of them Jesus told him that His grace was sufficient. Just like us today when we are in tribulations Jesus promises His yoke is easy and His burden is light. His unmerited favor and love are sufficient for us just like it was for Paul back then.
Good stuff Lynn!
Many also believe the messenger of Satan sent to buffet Paul to keep him from exalting himself was a Spirit of Anger.
The Bible says clearly that satan is one who comes to -kill -steal -destroy. Jesus came to give us life and that more abundantly. These truths are Biblical.
Just a side note an nothing more and you may know this or not.
This is not clearly what Jesus said in John 10.10 Jesus said the THIEF comes and many decades ago, certain tele-evangelists started saying the "ENEMY' or "SATAN" not the THIEF. This was too help propel the false prosperity gospel message. They further strayed and said and that in John 10.10 The THIEF that Jesus was talking about was the enemy of our soul, Satan, and the whole discourse in John 10 about the Good shepherd was about Satan Vs. Jesus, because the Enemy comes to steal..when in reality it is the THIEF and this is interpretation is not even close, but could does have its roots in Satan.
Proper Bible interpretation always asks who is talking and who is that person talking to. If we apply these 2 simple rules, we learn immediately who the enemy was Jesus was referring to in John 10.10, but to learn that, we must first go back a chapter and start at John 9.40. Why go back to John 9.40? because many preach and teach that Jesus was talking to his disciples in John 10 and therefore they came up with the idea that the enemy must be Satan.
However, the Bible should not be read as a linear book. Meaning you read one chapter and it ends there. Romans 1-8 must be read as a continuous thought to understand the gems it offers. Likewise Matthew 5, 6 and 7 is the complete sermon on the mount and never ends at each chapter.
The same is true for John chapters 9 & 10, you must read Chapter 9 to understand the discourse on the Good Shepherd and at John 9.40 is where we get revelation knowledge.
The disciples were not with Jesus when he found the Blind man that had been put out of the temple. After he speaks to the blind man we pick up Verse 40 below...
John 9.40-41
Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, “We are not blind too, are we?” [SUP]41 [/SUP]
Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.
John 10.1
“Truly, truly, I say to you............Jesus is still talking to the Pharisees, he spoke to and answered in John 9.41 not his disciples.....
John 10.6-7
[SUP]6 [/SUP]This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them. [SUP]7 [/SUP]So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.....Jesus is still talking to the pharisee's
John 10.10 [SUP]
10 [/SUP]The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have
it abundantly.
Jesus was talking and talking to the pharisees so how could the thief be turned into an enemy who is Satan?
Jesus was not saying clearly it is Satan who comes to steal, kill and destroy, but the thief that does do these 3 things is:
RELIGION! Jesus is not religion and his way is life and life more abundantly!
Verse 19 says: [SUP]19 [/SUP]A division occurred again among the Jews because of these words.
Every where in scripture when the disciples are around it says so by name, the disciples. The term used was THE JEWS, which means the Pharisee's and Sadducee's, because in Vs11-18 Jesus talks about resurrection.
It is religion that comes to steal, kill and destroy and at its heart is Satan.
