I was reading the thread on pigging out after fasting and began to wander where does it say that we are required to fast? I am not doubting this as i know jesus fasted in the desert himself. I am just curious how it applies to us and what are we to gain from it.

This is my take on fasting;
Our spirit man and our flesh are waring agaist eachother right? And as children of God we obviously want our spirit to reign over our flesh. Well if you think about it, we feed our flesh constantly. Most of us with three meals a day, everyday. Thats feeding our flesh...giving in to what it wants. So when we deprive it of food, we are denying our flesh of the things it wants. I guess a parallel would be like if you lust after something and not give in to your flesh, by doing this your spirit tends to come alive even more because your flesh is being denied. Many people say you get closer to God through fasting, for me its more of a way to focus on my spiritual being and not my carnal being. Theres a post in "testimonies" about fasting that I wrote, you might want to check it out because i dont feel Im doing a very good job explaining this right now. Anyways, I like to fast, it does help a persons spiritual life and finding what works for you is key. I tried to just give up food flat out a couple times and failed miserably. I figured out that you can deny your flesh a bunch without giving up food tatally.

Following the Lord always does wonders...if the Lord asks you to fast and you follow Him, you become more like Him and receive more light to see like him...If you fast to become holy or anything else on your own, you are forsaking Christ for your own will..and it is completely miserable...I have felt that...but when the Lord tells you to, he strenghtens you, so you stop carrying about food, even if you are hungry...I look at it this way, when I fast my body is actively always praying and appealing to the Lord for himself..every pang is just me and my body calling out to Him...because there are still hunger pangs but they are different than when you go solo without God.

The Lord be with you now and always

The reason I fast in to help me kill the flesh, allowing my spirit man to control my body, rather than the old man, I want him to stay dead.
