Forgiveness: Conditional or Unconditional?

Should the victim of an offense forgive the offender unconditionally?

  • Yes - Forgiveness is unconditional, and is not dependent on whether the offender confesses/repents.

I voted "No" based on Luke 17:3-4.

"So watch yourselves. If your brother or sister[a] sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. 4 Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

Previously I have thought that we should forgive unconditionally/blindly since that is what I heard, in order to be a "good" Christian. However, now I believe otherwise after reading more about this topic.

The real question here is: "Do you or do you not believe in the rebirth".

God does not negotiate salvation with us; we accept it or not.

What is it about works and salvation that is hard to comprehend?

A new creature in Christ is part of Christ and has no choice but to be holy. This is because the new creature is of new conscience and the only thing that is comfortable to the person who thanks Jesus for being saved is holiness.

We do not emulate God; we do not imitate Jesus. We are not Elvis impersonators: We are Elvis himself.

Forgiveness is a high calling that is richly rewarded.

Forgiveness is Christ in us, being ever faithful.

Forgiveness is recognition of the debt we have to pass on.

We must repent (change our mind) and believe the gospel/place faith in Jesus Christ for salvation in order to be saved. (Acts 3:19; 10:43; 11:17,18; 16:31; 20:21; Romans 1:16; 3:24-28 etc..).

Confessing with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believing in our heart that God raised Him from the dead are not two separate steps to salvation but are chronologically together. (Romans 10:8-10)

1 Corinthians 12:3 - Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. There is divine influence or direct operation of the Holy Spirit in the heart of a person when confessing that Jesus is Lord.

If there were conditions you could meet it would no longer be salvation by grace through faith.

Faith produces repentance. You cannot have faith and not have repentance. You cannot believe without the word of God.

The poll like most is flawed and skewed so it cannot produce an accurate result.

Did God still [choose] to Die for our sins whether we would accept or deny Him?
Forgiveness is unconditional, that happen to carry many conditional blessings when you truly are able to give forgiveness to another.

Acts 3 .19 is to Israel. Their sins will be blotted out when the Lord returns.

One can not have faith without repenting..because unless we repent we would still trust in self

in This context, no one will be saved apart from repentance

This question is not complicated and is not about faith or salvation. It's about whether we (not God) should forgive someone who has not repented.

I think God told people we should forgive a brother multiple times, whether they repent or not, so again. I think it is in context,

That's what I thought originally. Now I'm learning that forgiveness is a process that requires work on the part of both the victim and offender, not the silent forgiveness of the heart.

The part of the victim is to rebuke and call out the sin, once the offender repents, then the victim forgives.

I might agree. But to compare Gid forgiving us for all eternity based on our repentance and faith to God forgiving us because we did 90 mph on a 70 MPh speed zone is nit the same

I knew it was sin when I did it so I can’t repent of that sin

Also Gid already forgave me if that sin even before I ask

That’s why he tells us to forgive 70 X 7 times. Because he does that for us on a daily basis

Then we are not doing what God asks We should nit judge anyway. Let he who has no sin cast the first stone

It appears that the poll question is asking about forgiveness between humans, not from God.

Should forgiveness be conditional on the basis of the offender's repentance? No. Should forgiveness be completely unconditional? Also, no.

Forgiveness extended too soon leads to resentment, because we need time to process our emotions in the wake of an offense. Forgiveness withheld turns into bitterness, hatred, and a desire for revenge.

Forgiveness is releasing the person into God's hands, recognizing our own need for forgiveness from God. It is not a restoration of relationship, which rightly requires repentance and, as appropriate, restitution.
