eleutheroo - set at liberty, free from bondage [Young's Analytical Concordance]

John 8:31b, 32 If ye continue in my word then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.

I've always heard this scripture quoted as the "truth will 'set' you free." There is a difference in the word 'make' and the word 'set'. The word 'make' in this verse is the Greek word ginomai which means 'cause to be or become. The truth causes us to become free.

John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. We are definitely free because Christ has made us free.

Romans 6:18,20,22,23 Being then made free from sin ye became the servants of righteousness. Not by what we do but because God has made us righteous in Christ Jesus (1 Co. 1:30).

20) For when you were servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness . . . . before we were born again because that is when we were "free from righteousness"

22) But now being made free from sin and become the servants of God, ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life. 23) For the wages of sin is death BUT the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:5,6,9,10 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6) For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. . . . . 9) BUT
you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you
. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10) And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. . . ---- Whose righteousness makes us righteous? Have you noticed all the 'BUTS'? The language distinctly sets the difference of being in the flesh and being in the Spirit. That is our standing before God - HE looks upon the Spirit that has been created within us because of our faith in his Son.

It is true freedom to walk in the Spirit. When we keep our minds on spiritual things and we will not sin but and if we do does that then make us "of the devil"? 1 John 3:8,9 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. . . How can we be 'of the devil' if we are 'of God'? 9) Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. Now we know that we do still sin but we sin in the flesh. It is in the Spirit that we cannot sin because we are born of God and HIS seed remains in us.

No, this is not license to sin or to use our freedom to sin. We endeavor to live by the Spirit dwelling in us. BUT if we do sin - we confess our sin and 'he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' [1 John 1:9]

That's freedom - we are free from the past, free from fear of the future, free from condemnation - free to live our lives for the glory of God and Christ.

I agree and will say that it seems that words often get misread/overlooked/rejected and or denied by many.......

Such as the Thessalonian quote....

Those that would not receive the truth<-----this is what is usually stated in the quote...missing are the words...(love of)

That they all might be damned because they would not receive the LOVE OF the truth...

There is a difference in receiving the truth and receiving the LOVE OF the truth!

Good points to ponder for sure......!

By the Help of the HOLY SPIRIT, i am called in humble and humility and in due respect to this sister, assist her in unity to help her complete GOD's Word(CHRIST), so others who witness them and remember learning them, may distinguish and be built up, in 'abiding'.

"If/Unless you abide/keep/continue in My Words ...............................and you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free. ................................................................................. And when the SON sets you free, you are indeed free."

The Words of JESUS are in the written Gospels and have we welcomed them all by 'abiding' in them daily? And the Words of JESUS are in the Epistles of the Apostles, given to the churches as citizens of the Kingdom to come into one order of their KING, in submission and obedience to God and one another? The Words JESUS are in the book of Revelation in order for the 'abiding' church, young and old, to stay awake and be alert and be ready for tribulation and persecution to come?

These are the things of the HOLY SPIRIT, the Law of the SPIRIT of life, that sets us free and there is no condemnation, being in of CHRIST, the author and finisher of our faith to the every Word of GOD, the New Covenant which GOD made with us, all who partake the Holy Communion in remembrance to them, who were initially through the free gift of GOD, by HIS Grace and through faith, who were called to come in and further 'abide' in them and through them, add/supplement to their faith, as the excelling church for the world to witness spirit and truth founded true 'unity' worshiping the true GOD.

We have been rescued and set free from slavery to carnality practices with this world in ignorance, by this New MASTER in the SPIRIT, through HIS FATHER's unmerited favor and HIS Kingdom.

Why many Christian, who assume they are free and quote out of context and justify that they are legally freed. But truthfully through sound doctrine knowledge of the HOLY SPIRIT of the New Covenant justifies they are not free, but are putting on a show for CHRIST.

There are those who do not 'abide' in them and are still in he flesh and are cold.

There are those who partially 'abide' in them, in the spirit and partially in the flesh and are lukewarm

There are few who 'abide' in them completely and are hot.

As it is said by LORD JESUS CHRIST that;

"If/ Unless the SON sets you free, you are free indeed."

Are we truthfully 'abiding' according to the New Covenant, as the church, under mutual agreement with GOD to them all?

Good point made Mr Dcon :)

Also..how many times do we see people reading the bible/going to church because they think they HAVE to not because they WANT to.

If there is no love when they are reading, they probably will not understand the message that is being portrayed.
Which in that case they are unable to follow as a living example.

I work with homeless people, drug addicts, alcoholics and people coming out of prison. The choices they've made over the years have put themselves in bondage and slavery to not only sin but to the consequences of their sin. If we continue in the teachings of Jesus we will be set free from our bondage and slavery to sin and will eventually be delivered from the consequences of our sin such as being homelessness, unemployed, being in and out of jail, being hungry cold and wet all the time, as well as health related issues and domestic violence. Just the other night one of my new Bible study attendees was hit by a car and killed because he was drunk and staggering in the middle of the road. The wages of sin is death and it's not always physical death. Abiding in the teachings of Jesus will bring not only life but life abundantly.

Just a small corrective. Just because we may be 'walking in step' with the Lord, does not mean life will be Pollyanna...

Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.
(2Co 11:23-27) KJV

Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.
