Prov 4:7 'Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee'.

Wisdom is the application of knowledge. When we apply what we know and put it into practice by faith, we then get understanding about what we have applied.

A woman buys a box of cake mix and she follows the instructions on the box. She mixes in a bowl the ingredients, puts it in a greased and floured pan and bakes it according to the time and temperature suggested. When the time is up she pulls out the pan and there is the cake. If she left some ingredients out or she baked it at a lower temperature with a different time setting, the cake would not come out right and it would be a mess to deal with.

She took the instructions on the box, she applied it accordingly and she understood how to make a good cake. If she read the instructions and never put it together she would not have a cake. If she put it together and did not put it in the oven she would have the batter but no cake. Who would want to eat the batter that never became the cake and how can you apply the topping or frosting when you don't have a cake?

Some want to apply what they know but have only a limited knowledge of what it takes. They know what they want to produce but don't have the full knowledge to produce it.

As a boy, around 6 or 7 years old, I tried to make my favorite cookie, peanut butter. When my Mom was gone I turned on the oven and put a glob of peanut butter on a piece of foil, sprinkled it with sugar and stuck it in the oven. About 10-15 minute later I opened the door and to my dismay it was all melted and no cookies. I couldn't figure out what happened until I told my Mom and she explained it. She had understanding because of experientially knowledge and knew just what to tell me. She also told me to never do it again without her being there to oversee.

Wisdom is always the principal thing. It means this. We hear the word of God and we hide it in our heart. God brings us into a situation in His plan to see how we are going to respond. The Holy Spirit takes the word of God we have in our heart and brings it to out remembrance. We immediately mix faith with the word of God and apply it to the situation. We don't rationalize it or analyze it, we apply it right away. We don't know what it is going to produce but we do know that we have applied the word given to us through wisdom. We now have to wait through patience and let that patience have its perfect work in us (James 1:4). So God is ministering His word in the situation and working the fruit of patience in our life.

When we exalt wisdom (highly esteem) in this manner, she will promote us (exalt and lift us up) and bring us to honour (enrich our life in the eyes of others) as we embrace her. She will give us an ornament of grace for our head (many victories mentally and emotionally through grace) and a crown of glory (a promotion and reward of inward and outward light) will be delivered to us. If we have the wrong knowledge to apply, that did not come to us by grace through the Holy Spirit and from those that God has given to the church, them we have no wisdom to embrace and God can not promote us with grace and glory in the will of God.

If we want wisdom to be the principal thing that brings a promotion of grace and glory to us inwardly and outwardly in the details of life, we better get the right teaching to have the right knowledge that comes from Christ, so we can live in the grace and glory of victory instead of the stagnant knowledge and faith of the natural man that lives in defeat with no grace.
