"hate the sin, not the sinner"

What is so wrong with this statment, I don't see it in Scripture can someone show me where abouts it is?

We have to remember that this phrase was coined by someone who was not a christian therefore against God.

I say its not a truthful statement, what do you think?

I don't know who coined the phrase but the reality is this, if God hated the sinner as well as the sin we would be screwed. We are told to love everyone even those who hate us and persecute us, and then in Romans told to hate evil/sin, so this statement though maybe coined outside of christianity pretty much sums up our situation. We are to love sinners(because we all are sinners) but we are to hate sin.

Apparently Ghandi wrote or coined the phrase in his autobiography, whether he originally coined the phrase is up for debate.

There is a major problem with this saying, especially coming from Ghandi.

the premise on which this saying rests is that people hate sinners or more prescily, christians hate sinners. so if that is true then the statement is possibly true.

Of course if you are truly a christian you don't hate sinners, so the phrase is actually redundant, so the question has to be begged why do christians use this slogan, because it is not true of Christians. even secular society doesnt hate sinners, they hate those who do vile crimes whilst ignoring the fact that the lives they lead are vile to God?

that is the reason why I don't think it is a good slogan for Christians to use as a '''banner of truth'' because it simply is not...we don't hate sinners in the first place.

So I cannot see how it sums up our situation? for we don't hate sinners. the flip side is, it is more often than not used by those claiming to be christians yet clearly living a life of sin.

Just as a side issue, is it biblically correct to seperate the sin from the person? is sin not the human nature?????

Well yes I agree we as christians should not hate sinners, the unfortunate reality is there are so many who claim to be christians who definitely do hate sinners.

yip, hate is a strong word and emotion, it takes real bitternes to bring on hate. Personally I don't think I have actually ever met a 'real' christian who hates anyone.

Certainly and definatley angry, with a righteouss anger, say at thugs beating old people, or child killers etc. but hate certainly is strong.

probably a pointless thread really, i just clicked that the preimise behind the saying actually insinuates christians hate siners that was my point I suppose... now Im rambling lol

good answers Meridoc

19 Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God! Depart from me, therefore, you bloodthirsty men. 20 For they speak against You wickedly; Your enemies take Your name in vain. 21 Do I not hate them, O Lord, who hate You? And do I not loathe those who rise up against You? 22 I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies. (Psalm 139:19-22)

Yes? David an imperfect man hated the men that hated God. . .so. . .what is your point?

David was imperfect; Scripture isn't.

5 because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. (1 Kings 15:5)

6 Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not fully follow the Lord, as did his father Davd. (1 Kings 11:6)

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16)

Jesus told us to love our enemies.

Hi Ress that is very true indeed, but it doesnts answer the question about the statement! for it implies that we actually hate them in the first place?

We are to hate all sin.

Jesus said love your enemies, feed and clothe your enemies,so of course we would love all people.

The truth of Jesus' teaching is love people no matter how they act,for we are to be different than the world that hates some and loves some, for we are love all people with true love.

That statement would be true for we are to hate the sin that people do,but we are always to love people no matter how they act.

Ok lest see exactly what Jesus said about who God Loves...

John 14:21.....He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

it clearly say here who God will love, if they do not love the Son, they will not be loved of the Father God. and if you do not keep Jesus' commandments you do not love Him. and there is no where in the bible where God said he love sinners, just because he want to help them, does not say he love them, but he do want to love them. that is why He sent His Son to die... in His death God is offering His love to all... it is up to man to come to Jesus and except the love of God... if obedients to Christ is rejected so is the love of God..... while we were yet sinners God commended His love toward us.... look up the Word commend, it do not mean God loved us... it means that while we were uet sinners, God showing HIS LOVE, as Praise worthy and worthy to be excepted.... then comes the question for mankind... Do you want the Love of God? if the answer is yes, then we must love the Son by obeying Him with love, THEN THE FATHER WILL LOVE YOU!!!!

The phrase actually comes from Augustine. And its true. Jude made a statement that resembles it

to others show mercy, mixed with fear- hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

Jude 23

The "clothing" in scripture refers to our deeds.

Hate the sin and not the sinner is indeed biblical. C.S. Lewis remarks that the easiest way to proof it is to look at ourselves. We love ourselves [=wish ourselves the best] but hate, for instance, that we are cowards.

It needs to be said, because so many Christians hate on sinners. This forum is an excellent example of Christian Hate.

No one would need to say it, if Christians followed Jesus. But they don't. They follow some corrupt Right Wing Politician that gets in bed with the preacher and corrupts their minds.

The whole thing is a mess.
