We can also see that Moses' sister had just died, and perhaps he was a bit preoccupied with that grieving and that's why he had a short temper and disobeyed God's command to speak to the rock, but it also shows how important God's will is and when Jesus' said that we must be willing to turn away from our families to follow Him, He was serious. It really puts our faith and our priorities into perspective.

It's so easy to question/condemn them when they fail, especially when we can now see the whole story. Thanks for the reminder that he was a real person with real heartache. Gives the rest of us hope. :)

When I read this I think of how it applies to our faith today... are we a negative rock in the nonexistant puddle that causes the ripple effect of negativity that effects anothers faith? Would they all have had such negative thoughts if ones faith had not been shaken first. Do we allow what others say to us to ultimately effect Gods work through us & our faith in Him. Just some random thoughts.
Imoss, I love random, and these are good. :)

sorry, I'm DEFINITELY not a pastor :0) This is challenging to me & I have no clue how you guys do it week after week. God Bless you as you figure out your message.
I rely on God for the inspiration. Then I apply some perspiration in studying what God has laid on my heart. After that comes application (If I can't apply the message to my own life, then it may be the wrong message). The next step is supplication. I ask God to bless the message, the deliverer of the message and the hearers of the message.

I never write out a sermon in advance. I only put down the scriptures and a few notes. The delivery of the message is probably the hardest part for me because I have a great fear of public speaking. I have to totally rely on the Holy Spirit for the words and the the power to speak.

I leave the outcome to the Holy Spirit. I have only preached to a "normal" congregation once in my life. My congregation consisted of alcholics, drug addicts, ex-cons (and some criminals) prostitutes and street kids (some were gang members).
31 people came to the Lord and were baptized in my first two years as a pastor.

I give God all the glory for the work He has used me for. I now await His opportunity for further service.

In Christ,
John

The Israelites did not believe in God that He could provide for them after they seen the miracles that Moses did and how God delivered them in Egypt but smote the first born male of the people of Egypt. They whined as if they would have it better in Egypt than with the LORD after the LORD brought them out of Egypt, led them by a cloud during the day,led them by fire at night, and parted the red sea. After God did all that how did they think that God would not provide for them if He loved them enough to bring them out of Egypt.

How soon some people forget what the LORD has done but murmur as if the LORD is neglecting them.

In the second passage God told Moses to speak to the rock and it will gush forth water but Moses struck the rock twice with the staff disobeying God.It was as if Moses was so dependent on the staff that he did not trust that speaking to it would bring forth water.God wanted the Jews to witness that all Moses had to do was speak to the rock and it would bring forth water but Moses disobeyed God and struck the rock twice with the staff not sanctifying God in their sight.

Many times we equate Moses to Christ, and in many ways he was a type, but the better way to look at Moses and his relationship with the Lord is as a type for us. Because truthfully, we should have a closer relationship with the Lord than Moses did.

In His grace,

We do have a closer relationship with the Lord than Moses did when he was on earth because he could not have the Spirit which is the only way to have a spiritual relationship with God.

Well, yeah, but do we?

Are we listening to His voice, and obeying what He says, and not what we heard years ago, or what we thought He said?

That is relationship with Jesus, hearing Him and obeying Him, in love. That is all, plain and simple.

In reading the responces in this thread, I am again amazed and humbled by the power of the scriptures.
How God Our Father can give all and each of our hearts his message to us.
That each word is wthout limits in his understanding and will.
It is just so beyond our own understanding, yet a given understanding in his Holy Spirit!
