The gift of Discernment (1 Cor. 12:10)
Add this gift to the other gifts like leadership, serving, giving, mercy, and faith, the gift of discerning spirits.

ESSENTIALLY IT IS EVALUATING THE SPIRIT
The Greek root for discern, diakrino, means "to judge through, to see through to the truth, to truly evaluate something." So, discerning spirits is simply to evaluate the spirit whether it is God, or a spirit other than the Holy Spirit.

1co 12:6And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.1co 12:7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.1co 12:8For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;1co 12:9To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;1co 12:10To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:1co 12:11But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
of course to discern is to know the difference, so discerning of spirits sweet spirit vs. mean spirit, a good spirit vs evil spirit, happy vs depressed and so on!!!

Discerning how another person feels is a human trait, a sixth sense that most people have.
We can get discernment from the bible without needing a spiritual gift.
And yes there is a spiritual gift which is basically God telling a person.

Apprently I do, I tend to be very dense when it comes to God's pressence. Though sometimes I just get this feeling like something is really wrong. Not like wrong with me physically, but it's like something that could hurt me spiritually. You know, something like God's way of telling me to keep my guard up when I'm around them or something like that.

I would take it you are talking about the manifestation of the spirit called "discerning of spirits"
It is one of the revelation manifestations whereby God reveals to you the necessary information concerning the presence or non-presence of spirits, the identity of spirits present , and if evil, whether you may cast them out.

God bless

If you think he may have the gift, you should definitely pray about it, and se what more happens :)
.. the bible says something about any spirit not declaring

sorry if I'm "stealing" your thread by asking this, but I just came to think of it:
I've sometimes felt this kind of presence, both good and evil, but what I'm confused about is:
A couple of times I've feel like there is "something evil", but it doesn't go away. Does that mean it's just my mind playing games with me (I have a VERY vivid imagination), or does it simply mean I don't have the power to "kick" it? (I have once done that by the name of Jesus Christ). I've heard of people battling with spirits, which is confusing to me, just like those that won't go away, as I'd imagined the name of Jesus to be strong enough to make any evil presence go away.

any thoughts on this?

I think we need to distinguish between the scriptural gift of discerning of spirits we see in 1 corinthians 12 and this thing some label as the "gift of discernment" that really isn't in the Bible.

I'll cover the 'gift of discernment" first. I think many people claim to have this gift, (that really isn't a listed biblical gift) as a means of being able to read people. They almost act as if they have special powers and can judge the true intents of people. For many, this "gift" is more a gift of being really suspicious about someone without cause, but they justify their unfounded suspicions by appealing to some God given gift from above.

Let's look at the context of the discerning of spirits found in 1 Corinthians 12.

The context is about the local church meeting and exercising the gifts of the Spirit.

Paul says...3Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

The main thing these folks had to distinguish between was this. Is someone speaking by the Spirit of God or some other spirit?

This is where the 'gift of discerning of spirits' comes in.

9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues

This gift isn't about magically reading people and getting a feel for who they really are as a person, rather it's a gift that can distinguish whether something being said during the exercising of the gifts of the Spirit is really being said by God.

We really need to be careful about interpreting this gift properly. Many use it to simply black ball people, because they have a 'feeling' about them and they validate that 'feeling' by saying it's the gift of 'discernment'.

The gift of discernment of spirits simply judges if something being said during the use of the gifts of the spirit is from God or the devil. It doesn't give you a magic window into someone's very soul so you can measure and judge EVERY thought and intention of their mind.
