God is infinite. Man is finite. When man breaks God's law, an infinite atonement is required to satisfy the Lord's sense of justice. Since man if finite he is unable to atone infinitely, so he atones for eternity. Jesus being God is able to atone infinitely and pay our debt in full. Which means that Jesus suffered more for each one of us than all those in hell will ever suffer together.
