Gods name is Jesus Christ anyways and anyone can and have to speak that name.God does not need a name like man till he became one. Yet, if you have now become children of God why would you not now be able to say his name. A Child can say his parents name.
Well I disagree with you theologically, but aside from that, clearly he DID have a name, because he gave it to Moses :)
Perhaps one could argue he doesn't 'need' a name, but clearly he has one anyways.

Actually I believe names are (or should be, at least) descriptive of character, or at least personal to the person being named. Names all have meanings, you know? In the Hebrew culture most names are given reasons.

Adam is Hebrew for man, and he was the first man.

Eve (in Hebrew Chava) means life, or living, because she was the mother of all life.

Cain sounds like the Hebrew for 'brought forth' or 'acquired' and Eve said at his birth, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man."

Seth probably means 'granted', "G-d has granted me another shild in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."

Noah sounds like the word for 'comfort', and his father Lamech said, "He will comfort us in the labour and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the LORD has cursed."

Abram 'Exalted father' became Abraham 'father of many'.

Ishmael means 'G-d hears', "You are now with child and you will have a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery."

Isaac means 'laughter' or 'he laughs', because Abraham and Sarah laughed when he was promised to them. "Then G-d said, "Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac."

Esau was named because he was hairy, he was also called Edom because he was red. Jacob was so names because he grasped his brother's heel and was a deciever.

I could literally keep going all day. In many cultures, the Hebrew one included, a name is much more than a convenient handle to refer to a person, it's is a statement of who they are. Of their character, their identity.

Even Jesus, Yeshua means 'he saves'. It wasn't just a random nice-sounding tag lol. It was a representation of his character and his mission.

An interesting correlation is found in Acts 19:13-17. As I understand, Jewish exorcists were popular because they knew how to pronounce God's name.

I don't know about you, but I never call my parents by their given names. They are Mom, Mommy, Mother, Mum, Dad, Daddy, Father, etc. I was raised to believe it is disrespectful to call your parents by their given name, and it's just weird. So, not using my parents' given names is a sign of respect.

Likewise, I would not call God by His actual name because 1) I can't pronounce it and 2) it just isn't done. Children do not call their parents by their first name.

When I talk of my parents, I quite often find myself say "Mom this and that" or "Dad so and so" making the pronouns "Mom" and "Dad" into nouns. I don't often say "My mom" or "My dad". "God" could be considered a pronoun turned noun in the same. Instead of sayin "My god" I say "God." "God" has become His first name to me, like "Mom" and "Dad" have become my parents' first names to me.

Yes, but on the internet in particular, we don't know who's out there veiwing what we write, and we don't know what they'll do with it. Better safe than sorry, right?

Also I'm with Hollie. We grew up with the belief that it's rude to call your parents by their first names, and in fact all adults are to be called "Miss' "Mrs' 'Mr' etc unless they request otherwise...which most of 'em do these days. In fact even now, my 16 year old sister gets in trouble if she refers to Dad by his first name. It's just not done. We are not their equals, we are their children.

I like that statement.

Sometimes when I'm calling Dad and he doesn't hear me, I'll say his name. It'll go something like "Dad...Dad...Dad... DAD... Henry!" "What?" "I've been calling your name for like 5 minutes."

Suhweet! Say hi for me? :p
Right now? That would require getting out bed... oy. I'll go say hi real quick... good news. Dad has absolutely no clue who you are. lol This means you will one day be a great family friend.

"Oh, I'm supposed to tell you Brandon said hi and he's going to call you 'dad'." -me
"Who's Brandon?" -dad
"McGibby." -Tori
"A friend from mypraize, dad." -me
*confused look on face* "Why's he want to call me dad?" -dad
"because I said I call you dad, so he wants to call you dad." -me
"...okay." -Dad

Now, I need to get back to my homework... *coughcough*

Also, sorry for completely derailing the thread.

We don't say the Name. That's reserved for the holiest man on earth, the High Priest, for the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippor (Day of Atonement), in the holiest place on earth, the Holy of Holies in the Temple in Jerusalem.

Keeping G-d's name any more holier than that just isn't possible. :)

And since there is no Temple yet, no one says the Name.

Yeshua himself didn't use the name either when reading from the Isaiah scroll about himself even. He used a circumlocution - Kurios in the greek, but most likely Adonai if he was reading the Hebrew in the synagogue.
I'm a little curious on what name you all will be using for satan himself when he is sitting in your temple pretending to be God, the Messiah.
3Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Christ is not coming to sit in the temple, only Satan wishing he was God. The true believers won't be going to the temple to worship the great deceiver.

7And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
He is cast down to deceive the whole world.

10And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
11And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
12Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
13And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
14And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
15And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
The only thing that comes from satans mouth is lies. It's a flood of lies.

16And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
17And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
The true believers shall keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
