Sadly I have seen so many definitions of what the term "legalism" means lately, I think people are confused, and we have to try and learn and differentiate between all these interpretations and what the real term mean.. IE, When you hear the term, what does it really mean, and where does it come from

The term is actually a judicial term. It means that a person has been legally convicted of a crime, and must pay the debt of that crime to society. And also will or may suffer some ramifications of doing the things that he did. Like being looked down on, Not accepted into society (even after the debt was paid) he may suffer illness as a result or punishment for what he did, etc etc.

Jesus himself is a legalist. He is the most pure legalist there is, He is true righteousness (perfection) and he requires true righteousness from his creation. He gave us these requirements in the law. and said if you want to relate to me of your own power. this is how you do it, If you fail to do it even once, our relationship is severed, and your judged with the curse, which is death.

[h=1]Deuteronomy 27:26[/h] [SUP]26 [/SUP]‘Cursed is the one who does not confirm all the words of this law by observing them.’ “And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’

As God told Adam . In the moment you eat of this tree, you will die. SO judgment has been pronounced on all men, because as paul said, all men have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

There you have Jesus as the pure legalism. And there you have his demands (perfect obedience to the law.)

if you want to be a legalism. this is the type of legalism you have to be, Any other type of legalism is a watered down perversion of true legalism
.

What is Jesus form of legalism?
1. I am righteous, you must be righteous also
2. The penalty of not living up to my standard of righteousness is death (spiritual)

so who in CC has lived up to this standard? And why would anyone want to water down this standard?

How do we water it down?
By defining it for what it is not, a judicial term.

The judicial term states, your penalty is death, This is the ONLY penalty which can be given to make one pay the crime back in full. Nothing short will do it

Yet what do watered down legalist say?

Thats (spiritual death is only way to pay for sin) is not true.

1. You can start to pay for you sin by water baptism, that will wash your sin away
2. You can pay you sin by repenting and follow my watered down version of mosaic law.
3. You can pay for your sin by receiving Christ, as long as you maintain this standard of living, Confess your mistakes (sin) and do not stop having faith (do not fall back into sin)
4. You can pay for your sin by suffering
5. You can pay for you sin by observing these religious sacraments or traditions.
6. You can pay for your sin (if it is not to sever) by going to a priest, and confessing that sin, and doing acts of penance
7. You can pay for that sin by giving money to the church (Yes I have heard this a few times from a pastor hear in my city)

I have given just a small sample of ways people water down the judgment of sin and the payment of sin, I think we all get the idea of what it looks like when we do this.

So what is Gods answer to legalism? Redemption

He showed this first to adam.

After Adam sinned, He did not tell adam to confess his many sins (in fact Adam not only did not confess, He tried to hide, and blame shift) Yet God in his grace and mercy, Killed an innocent animal. And covered Adam’s sin (nakedness) with his flesh and blood.

In the law he showed. Sin once and you’re cursed.

in order to be redeemed, An innocent animal without blemish must be sacrificed to make amends for that sin. A priest took over these sacrificial duties, and even in the end, made a day of atonement sacrifice to make sure any and all sin which were committed by anyone of the children of Israel over the last year, were covered.
Which was all a picture God was giving to show us what true legalism (judgment) looks like, and his plan to overcome his justice so he himself could restore the relationship with the people he loved (the world) by the sacrifice of the lamb of God, who removes the sin of the world (Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah to not only Israel. But the world, Gods chosen.)

Of course to those who understand what TRUE legalism is, it all makes sense, The penalty of sin is death, thus death must cover the sin, either by the one who is guilty, or by the one who wants to redeem (purchase) the guilty ones freedom from that penalty. Nothing short of this (non of the watered down payments I tried to show you) will pay for one sin, let alone the thousands of sins we are all guilty of.

In review.

Jesus is the pure legalist, He overcame legalism by redemption (his son’s death)
God wants us to teach redemption, not legalism.

Legalism is dangerous, because legalism says if you do not live up to my standard, and do what I have determined to do to pay for your sin, you will not get to heaven. Even if you were saved at one point, if you do not do what I say, you will lose that salvation, and be cursed to an eternal hell.
Of course God said this, but his standard is perfect obedience to the law (which he wrote in our hearts)

So. What does modern day legalism look like? Do we understand it? Can we see it? Can we see how dangerous it can be to the plan of God of winning people to Christ, and letting them actually come to his rest?

What an offense to God. A man claims to be able to be as good as Jesus Christ. How does this differ from Lucifer saying I will be like the Most High God?

The legalist says I will, I will, I will when he cannot. Jesus said it is finished. I have done all that the Father has given Me to do.

Thats the problem, Like Israel, who said I will I will I will, and yet they could not. so they had to water down the law to fit their own lives. misinterpret the physical acts of the law as payment for some of their sins, so they could actually feel as if they lived up to that standard. or felt alright, because they paid for those little sins they did (by these physical acts) so God will be ok with them.

The fulfilled their end of the bargon, Now God has to keep his. Which is why when Jeus came to show them, they have not done what they promised to do (I will I will I will) like they think they have, so he had to come do what they could not do. Pay the Penalty for them.

A modern day legalist is no different, they do the same things, using different words. Different watered down laws. And differing means of repaying God with our physical works (ie water baptism)
