Do you guys give something up for Lent? I know a lot of Christians (not Catholics) who do it, but I never have. Do you think it's important?

I'm torn on this one. On one hand it seems like a tradition taught by men and on the other hand, if a person wants to give something up to become closer to God, how can that be a bad thing?

I guess if it's just something you do because it's a ritual, I'd be against it. If practicing lent is a season of dedicated devotion to God and giving up something brings you closer to Him, then by all means do it.

The 1st time I even heard of Lent was when I was dating a catholic girl. I have never heard of any other religion practicing lent. So I figured it was a Catholic only practice. Who else practices Lent? I mean What other religions. Like Methodists or the pentacosticals for example.

I was a Catholic and my family is Catholic, so even up to now the family observe this season as something really sacred. No shouting, no eating of meat, and no rejoicing and have to participate in church activities. But since I have come to know Jesus and the real essence of commemorating his death I no longer participate in this activities. For the sake of respect I don't eat meat and I can't laugh hard during holy week. :)

My wife and I observe Lent. I think Lent and Advent and other sorts of holidays on the Church calendar (Easter, Christmas) can be very useful for our spiritual health if we approach them seriously.

^ I agree. Our church (evangelical) often use this season to evangelize.. We do cantata and street evangelism, or something like that.

haha!
The reason why laughing is fobidden to laugh is that they believe the world should be lamenting since it's Jesus' death.

Oh I know what you mean. Sometimes Im reaching in my pocket to get a quarter for the candy machine and theres all kinds of lent on it.

A guy should be able to get candy without the interference of lent.

I know, i know, I want to rejoice too. But if you're fully aware of Catholic's tradition you would understand. They actually portray the death of Christ, like in the movie "The Passion of Christ"

Neither Methodists or Pentecostals hold to lent. In fact, I don't recall any Evangelical faith that holds to it either. However, I'm pretty sure that scripture speaks about the Old Testament feasts being observed when Christ finally sets up His here on earth.
