Mark 1:18-20 King James Version (KJV)
18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.
19 And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

Mark 1:18-20 Expanded Bible (EXB)

18
So Simon and Andrew immediately left their nets and followed him.
19 Going a little farther, Jesus saw two more brothers, ·James and John, the sons of Zebedee [L James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John]. They were in a boat, ·mending [preparing]their nets. 20 Jesus immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers and followed Jesus.

18 They stopped living their normal lives and started to walk after Jesus, they knew they could go back to their nets at any point but chose to walk after Jesus because they saw something in Him worth following. Walking after Jesus doesn’t mean we stop living our lives but means we start to truly live because we are living for the giving of life.

19 It is likely that they worked together as a fishing team or that they knew each other well because of them doing the same job. Mending their nets meant they were either done for the day or they needed to fix their nets before casting them out again.

20 So Zebedee would be fishing with these hired servants, this isn’t small time fishing but fishing industry there are walking away from to follow God. Sometimes we have to walk away from small things to follow God but other times we have to walk away from the big things.

This passage refers to Jesus calling His twelve disciples for the work of being Apostles.

Not everyone has this calling.

  • And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.

28 So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. Matthew 19:28-29

  • everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake

Here is the balance to this scripture.

  • But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 Timothy 5:8

One scripture says -

  • everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children

The other says -

  • if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith

Has Jesus called us to the work of the ministry, to leave all and follow Him?

James, John and Jesus may have been brothers!
In the NIV the operative phraise to look for is Guardian--redeemer check out Ruth chapter 4 & Leviticus 25:25-55. In the case of Ruth, a widow that had fallen upon hard times her late husbands unmarried next of kin may have been required by law to marry her, redeem her from poverty and restore the family name. If Mary was a widow by then, Zebedee could have been the lords uncle and / or step father. That would also make James and John the lords 1/2 brothers or if Zeb was a widower also they would be his step brothers.

That is one of the things that was skipped over in Catholic school as it would blow the sacred eternal virgin (which is not in the Bible anywhere) myth all to pieces. OOps!

Don't take my word for it or argue until you read it all first. The operative word now is 'could'. We don't know what happened to Joseph and we don't know where Zebedee came from. As the counsel of trent (the Vatican) decided what to keep and what to leave out when they assembled the Bible and it sure has no effect on salvation. Just food for thought.
