Modern Bible versions say "vultures" but the word means "eagles" (or birds of prey).
For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles* be gathered together (Mt 24:28 KJV)

*Strong's Concordance (105)
aetos: an eagle
Original Word: ἀετός, οῦ, ὁ
Part of Speech: Noun, Masculine
Transliteration: aetos
Phonetic Spelling: (ah-et-os')
Definition: an eagle
Usage: an eagle, bird of prey.

This is connected to the Second Coming of Christ, in which the battle of Armageddon occurs first (Revelation 19). This battle will result in the total supernatural destruction of all the enemies of Israel and Christ who will be gathered at Armageddon (outside Jerusalem). Their carcasses (dead bodies) will be scattered for miles, and all the birds of prey will be summoned supernaturally to clean up the mess.

And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. (Rev 19:18,19)

We, as members of the Body of Christ, died with Him on the Cross, though we live because of Him. Where ever the Body is the vultures gather round for they wish to devour the dead. Praise Jesus, they cannot.

I don't believe this has anything to do with the context. Christians are ALIVE in Christ.

The understanding given me is it is a direct reference to all false brethren and the apostasy accompnying them.

Éagles and vultures are scavengers of dead bodies for food.

The eagle is the symbol of the Roman army. They destroyed the Temple in AD70 that was full of wickedness and likewise Jesus in the end times will again destroy the wicked. That's it in a nutshell.
