1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “pray constantly.” What exactly does this mean?

I believe that is self explanatory simply "pray constantly."

I don't think it means you have to pray 24/7, but instead that prayer should be a constant in your life. Whether it is 1 time a day or 15 times a day, just make a habit of praying.

Should we pray as we go about our everyday activities?

Sure. You could check out a Jewish prayer book about that. They have prayers for pretty much everything. An ugly person, a beautiful sunset, eating a snack, breathing, prayers for waking up, prayers for going to bed. And they aren't long prayers. Most of them are short little 1-2 line prayers they say just to keep God on their mind throughout the whole day. If you are incorporating God into everything you do by praying about it, it helps keep your mind focused on things above.

for example, the prayer for waking up: I give thanks before You, Living and Eternal King, that You have returned within me my soul with compassion; how abundant is Your faithfulness!
really short.

this is a prayer I say every time I eat bread or a meal with bread: Blessed are You, L-rd, our God, King of the universe, Who brings forth bread from the earth."
again. really short.

The thing about these prayers is you don't have to say them, but for people who aren't good at thinking up prayers it can help to have prayers already memorized so when you want to pray but can't think of anything to say, just say one of the many prayers you have memorized. As long as you say it with the right mindset God can appreciate it.

The tricky part is making sure memorized prayers don't lose their significance to you, but that could be said about prayers made up on the spot as well. I could easily say "Father God, thank you for this day and for all the beauties it shows." something I just thought up, but what good does that prayer do me if it is just words coming out of my mouth and nothing more?

If you want to pray often during the day, the most important thing is making sure it is coming from your heart and that you aren't just doing it so you can say you pray.

It means always talking to God, always on your mind, always in your heart, and in everything you do talking to Him.

Prayer should not be forsaken. It is to be a part of our lives... consistency. It is an action, not a feeling or mood or attitude.

Think of Daniel. He had a regular pattern of behavior when it came to prayer. It was used against him, but he prevailed without compromise.

First off, never did I say "this is my advise" I said "this is john piper's take on it" I believe that yes you should be in contact with God constantly. Look at David. He was a worshipper. He didn't just worship here and there, he worshipped all the time. Yea he messed up, but if you look at his many psalms, he is constantly giving God praise in what he does. Now if you have to say short prays here and there to keep God on your mind, if that is meaningful to you, than yes I am behind that. but if you are simply saying these prayers because someone is telling you to than no. I'm not saying to listen to this guy and do everything he says. I wsa simply saying that he has an interesting theory on it.

Yes, but I was thinking about just “talking” with the Lord. Certainly, he is the LORD—we can’t treat him as if he is just another friend. But I think we need to remember he is always with us, and we need to make the effort to always be aware of his presence. Doesn’t that make sense?

I don't recall the exact prayer, but it isn't for a homely person to say. It is for people who see the homely person to say. You say it to acknowledge God created everything, and even what you think is ugly is still His creation.

You can pray however you want. I was just giving the example that it is possible to pray throughout the day in short prayers. Whether you want to memorize prayers or make your own up is your prerogative.

And yes, that makes sense.

Matthew 6
5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.
9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

It means to not only call on the lord in prayer when you are in need, but to include him in your daily life. Pray to him over the small things in your everyday life, the little problems, praying for others that you come across, etc etc. Then also not just calling on the lord when you are in need but calling on him so that you can bring glory unto his name by being a beacon of light for others.
