What is Satan trying to accomplish? It seems to me he wants us to bow down to him. I will offer this as evidence:

[8] Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them;
[9] and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." Matthew 4:8-9 RSV

Furthermore, I would say that he cannot show his face in this world, so he tries to get us to bow down to each other. When he accomplishes that, he has in effect forced us to bow down to him.

It might occur to someone that the Lord has earned our worship. He has created each of us, sustained us, and is leading us to heaven. Satan has done nothing to earn our worship.

What is Satan trying to accomplish?
Isaiah 14
12 “ How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
13 For you have said in your heart:
I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
‘
On the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’

15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol,
To the lowest depths of the Pit.
16 “ Those who see you will gaze at you,
And consider you, saying:
‘ Is this the man who made the earth tremble,
Who shook kingdoms,
17 Who made the world as a wilderness
And destroyed its cities,
Who did not open the house of his prisoners?’
18 “ All the kings of the nations,
All of them, sleep in glory,
Everyone in his own house;
19 But you are cast out of your grave
Like an abominable branch,
Like the garment of those who are slain,
Thrust through with a sword,
Who go down to the stones of the pit,
Like a corpse trodden underfoot.
20 You will not be joined with them in burial,
Because you have destroyed your land
And slain your people.
The brood of evildoers shall never be named.
21 Prepare slaughter for his children
Because of the iniquity of their fathers,
Lest they rise up and possess the land,
And fill the face of the world with cities.”

Satan is essenitally trying to accomplish dragging as many souls as possible into hell, as that is were he is destined to go himself.
That passage you refer to (Matthew 4:8,9) is related to Satan trying to temp Christ into sinning, which would have made his death on the cross of no effect in terms of you or I or anyone being saved.

I agree.

And I have to say... Chesterton is the best! I discovered him over the summer, he's now my favourite author lol

George Bernard Shaw, a good friend and combatant of Chesterton's, once said (of Chesterton) that he was a man of collossal genius - and I agree.
I think Chesterton's wit is nothing short of extraordinary and I love quoting him! I'm currenty reading his book called Orthodoxy. I have to concentrate really hard when reading his work!
