Psalms 23: 4
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Then:

Psalm 17:8 Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,

Psalm 36:7 How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

Psalm 63:7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.

Psalm 57:1 To the chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David, when he fled from Saul in the cave. Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. (I really like this last part, UNTIL …..)

So I was wondering what it means by valley of shadow of death, and what the shadow of thy wings looks like? Also, how does thy rod and thy staff comfort oneself?

Death is but a shadow for a believer.....passed from death UNTO LIFE......

The shadow of God's wings represent a refuge from anything and everything...

The rod and staff comfort because of it's use......as a rod is corrects us and keeps us going in the right direction, as a staff it leads us as a good shepherd.....we can take comfort in both....GOD only whips children (a sure sign of being a child is chastisement if one walks contrary) and for sure we can know if God is leading us.......

Also Jesus said::

Luke 13: KJV
34 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would
I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!"

Under the Wings represents Gods protection and comforting
The Rod represents Gods disapline to His Children and also the wrath of God upon those who reject His truth..

Revelation 19: KJV
15 "And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God."

When a shepherd cares for his sheep, really cares, sthe sheep love him, and when close to him they will have a tendency to nuzzle up to the shepherd's rod or staff showing their love and dtrust of him.

PS, something of note for those who are not familiar with shepherds of goats and sheep. Each sheherd has a specific call or sound dthey make and when several flocks are together feeding on the hills, each knows their master's specific call, voice.
