Some of us were fortunate enough to go to schools where shop classes were mandatory. In mine wood, metal, drafting and gardening were required for boys to graduate the 9th grade. Girls had home economics, cooking, arts & crafts (sewing, leather, beading etc.).
In the days that Jesus spoke in public, men were shepherds, farmers, carpenters, metal workers and soldiers. Women worked at home raising children but also making food (with fire), as well as clothing and hand crafted items to take to the market place and sell.. (See Proverb 31). They had no electricity, and the only calculators were like the abacus. The young now days don't know how to use their hands or their heads like was done before the industrial revolution, thus don't understand what terms like refined or tested by fire or you don't sew a new patch on and old piece of cloth, or keeping oil for lamps mean. They think oil comes from the ground and food comes from the store. Bring up a child in the way they should go so when they grow up they will not depart. Teach your children what you know. Don't depend on others to do it for you.
