The Word says......

Proverbs 18:21 King James Version (KJV)

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

I was hoping to get some opinions about the power of what we say. God spoke all there is into existence and I believe that what we say and think we get.

Proverbs 23:7 King James Version (KJV)

7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

I am not looking to build a doctrine or get into any arguments, I am just curious to see others opinions on whether our words have power and if so how much.

Shalom.

Yes, our words have power. What we choose to say can bring life or death. And what we say comes from what is in our heart.

But I can't stand the nonsense that would say whatever we think and say, as believers, is what we will get. It doesn't take into account any of the verses that are in tension to:whatever you ask you will receive. Like: you ask and don't receive because of wrong motives in your heart. Or: if we ask for anything IN HIS WILL...

I've asked for many things I did not get. I've asked Him to open someone's eyes to see Him. My main motive, hidden to me but in my heart, was so they would be nicer to me and my daily life would be easier.

And I've also prayed this and was with the motives of love for them and fear for their state, and still their eyes were not opened, but it is GOD who knows when someone is ready for love.

It is insane to think your motives are always pure. There remains a lot in me that can be self seeking, self concerned, selfish, impure in motive.

The verses show that there are some reasons why we don't always get what we ask for. Because our motives aren't pure and because its not His will. Sometimes it isn't His will AT PRESENT.

Presenting a verse without the verses in tension to it does not bring understanding. It brings misunderstanding.

James 3:4-12 "Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind,8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water."

Vengeance is the Lords and will be a wrath poured over the entire earth

I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse anyone who curses you; and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

2 “I am Adonai your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the abode of slavery.
ב 3 “You are to have no other gods before me. 4 You are not to make for yourselves a carved image or any kind of representation of anything in heaven above, on the earth beneath or in the water below the shoreline. 5 You are not to bow down to them or serve them; for I, Adonai your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but displaying grace to the thousandth generation of those who love me and obey my mitzvot.
ג 7 “You are not to use lightly the name of Adonai your God, because Adonai will not leave unpunished someone who uses his name lightly.
ד 8 “Remember the day, Shabbat, to set it apart for God. 9 You have six days to labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Shabbatfor Adonai your God. On it, you are not to do any kind of work — not you, your son or your daughter, not your male or female slave, not your livestock, and not the foreigner staying with you inside the gates to your property. 11 For in six days, Adonai made heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. This is why Adonai blessed the day, Shabbat, and separated it for himself.
ה 12 “Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land which Adonai your God is giving you.
ו 13 “Do not murder.
ז (14) “Do not commit adultery.
ח (15) “Do not steal.
ט (16) “Do not give false evidence against your neighbor.
י 14 (17) “Do not covet your neighbor’s house; do not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female slave, his ox, his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
(A: vii) 15 (18) All the people experienced the thunder, the lightning, the sound of the shofar, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled. Standing at a distance, 16 (19) they said to Moshe, “You, speak with us; and we will listen. But don’t let God speak with us, or we will die.” 17 (20) Moshe answered the people, “Don’t be afraid, because God has come only to test you and make you fear him, so that you won’t commit sins.” 18 (21) So the people stood at a distance, but Moshe approached the thick darkness where God was.
A Footstool
(A: Maftir) 19 (22) Adonai said to Moshe, “Here is what you are to say to the people of Isra’el: ‘You yourselves have seen that I spoke with you from heaven.
20 (23) You are not to make with me gods of silver, nor are you to make gods of gold for yourselves. (S: Maftir) 21 (24) For me you need make only an altar of earth; on it you will sacrifice your burnt offerings, peace offerings, sheep, goats and cattle. In every place where I cause my name to be mentioned, I will come to you and bless you. 22 (25)

If you do make me an altar of stone, you are not to build it of cut stones; for if you use a tool on it, you profane it. 23 (26) Likewise, you are not to use steps to go up to my altar; so that you won’t be indecently uncovered.’”

Vengeance is Mine, and recompense;
Their foot shall slip in due time;
For the day of their calamity is at hand,
And the things to come hasten upon them.’

Stunned you say well:

When we ask anything according to His will. I believe that means our minds will be on the same plane as Jesus'.
Php. 2:5: "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:"

Once we get to that point, God is sure we will only ask according to His will. These temporal things, like food on your table or money in your pocket, you will leave to Him completely.

Yes! He said we weren't to worry about food, clothing, temporal provision. But if we won't believe Him about an earthly thing, how can He tell us about heavenly things?

Appreciate the replies. I was not referring to asking God for things, I meant more that what we say matters. I also find that I control my "mood" more than I like to admit. I can either focus on this world and be negative or I can focus on God and live more in the Spirit. It seems, at least in my case, that what I focus on I become.

The OP started out by saying "The Word says..." so he provided a lot of words. A question of quality over quantity. An understandable mistake.

Spoken Words Of Faith

Genesis 1: 9 times, God said & He saw, God said & He saw, God said & He saw, God said & He saw, God said & He saw, God said & He saw, God said & He saw, God said & He saw, God said & He saw. And a world was born.

Proverbs 18:4 The ""words"" of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.

Psalms 51:15 O Lord, open thou my ""lips""; and my ""mouth"" shall shew forth thy ""praise""

Psalms 69:30 I will ""praise"" the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving

Psalms 103:19-21 His angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments ""hearkening unto the voice"" of his word

Job 22:28
""Decree"" a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

Jesus by Faith SPOKE to a fig tree, SPOKE to the wind, SPOKE to raging waters, SPOKE to fish & loves, SPOKE to sickness, SPOKE to disease, SPOKE to demons, SPOKE to death. All obeyed his SPOKEN commands.

Matthew 7:7 (A) Jesus said, ""Ask"" and it shall be given you;

Matt 17:20 Jesus said to them, truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will "say" to this mountain (NOTE: any problem, no matter how big), ‘Move from here to there, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

Matt 21:22 Jesus said, And all things, whatsoever ye shall ""ask"" in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Mark 11:23 Jesus said, For verily ""I say"" unto you, That whosoever ""shall say"" unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he ""said"" shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he ""saith""

John 14:13 Jesus said, whatsoever ye shall ""ask"" in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I ""speak"" unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. (NOTE: The Lord Himself ""said"" ""spoken"" are spirit & life)

2 Cor 4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I ""spoken"" we also believe, and therefore ""speak"" (NOTE: A reference to Psalm 116:10. Where King David ""said"" I believed, therefore have I ""spoken"")

Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our ""lips"" giving thanks to his name.

Rom 10:8 The word is near you, even in your ""mouth""

Rom 10:9 (A) That if thou shalt ""confess"" with thy ""mouth"" the Lord Jesus

Rom 10:10 (B) with the ""mouth"" confession is made unto salvation.

Rom 10:12 (B) for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that ""call"" upon him.

Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall ""call"" upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Rom 10:17 Faith comes by hearing = ""Spoken"" words

Numbers 6:
22 And the LORD ""spoke""" unto Moses, ""saying""

23 ""Speak"" unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, ""saying"" unto them

24 The LORD will bless thee, and keep thee

25 The LORD will make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee

26 The LORD will lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the ""tongue"": and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

What's on your menu? Bon Appetit...

I am not looking to build a doctrine or get into any arguments, I am just curious to see others opinions on whether our words have power and if so how much.

Shalom.

Yes our words have power, but not from ourselves. It’s like this... If I see someone use a lighter to start a fire, then I pick up that lighter and also start a fire, it is not of my own power. I am using someone else’s source of power, no power came from me. God’s words have power- both physical and spiritual life come from that power. If I then speak the Word of God, the Word will do what the Word does. Moses struck the rock as if the power to make water flow came from himself- which is why he could not enter the promise land but only look upon it.

God SPOKE/SAID: Light Be! And our universe began.

ALL WORDS MATTER

Jas 3:5 Even so the ""tongue"" is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

Prov 6:2 Thou art snared with the ""words"" of thy mouth, thou art taken with the ""words"" of thy mouth.

Prov 16:24 Pleasant ""words"" are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Prov 15:1 A soft ""answer"" turneth away wrath: but grievous ""words"" stir up anger.

Proverbs 18:4 The ""words"" of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.

God changed Abram (meaning high exalted father) to Abraham (meaning father of a multitude of nations) Gen 17:5. He did it by inserting the 5TH letter of the Hebrew alphabet H ("Hei") & the symbol for the number 5 (Grace)

God changed Sarai (meaning my princess) to Sarah (mother of nations) Gen 17:15. He added "H" (Hei/Grace)

After 15 years of silence by God, while Abraham himself tried to make a seed for God. He became too old he GAVE UP.

One yr after God changes thier names, Sarah is with child

Why? Their SPEACH confessions were changed. Everytime they or anyone else SPOKE their NAMES. They declared: Abraham Father of a multitude of nations or Sarah mother of nations! SPOKEN words are SEEDS!

Jericho an unconquerable, walled city. Walls 11 feet high, 14 feet wide. The top a smooth stone slope, angling upward at 35 degrees for 35 feet. Its walls were thought to be impenetrable

Joshua 6:2 & 16 says, God had given the city of Jericho to them before they even began to march around its walls

God gives Joshua a two step plan to conquer. Have the people to march "silently" around Jericho for 6 days, & then on the 7th day, to blow trumpits & SHOUT.

On day 7, Before they blow & shout. Joshus Declares via the SPOKEN word: The Lord has this day given you this city. They blow & SHOUT & the walls tumble down

Why " march silently"? So, no negative WORDS/SPEACH could get in the way

Luke 1:11 & 13 An angel comes to Zacharias & Elisabeth. Telling they will give birth to John the Baptist. Verse 18 Zacharias SPEAKS WORDS of doubt. & angel causes him to become dumb until the child born

Why? To keep Zachs negative WORDS of UNBELIEF from getting in the way!

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the ""tongue"": and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

If our words aren't powerful seeds. How can they carry LIFE & DEATH? We will LIVE & DIE by what we SAY/SPEAK!.
