Apostle Paul said, "He who speak in tongue speak not to men but to God. No one understand him/her but he/she speak mysteries." Apostle Paul also said he speak in tongue more than the believers in his time and instruct do not forbid speaking in tongue. Those who do not ask or do not have this gift have no problem with me. But I regret much because they lost the opportunity to speak to God directly as what Apostle Paul said. Ordinary known language prayer will do- but the power attach to praying in tongue particularly what we shall be needing specifically in the future in terms of our health, safety, financial needs, relationships, etc. things we can not foresee therefore we will miss in regular language prayer. Whereas when we pray in tongue, the Holy Spirit can guide us on what to pray for the things we can not foresee in the future.

Speaking in tongue is a gift of the Holy Spirit. A gift is to be received or else will not have it. First you have to understand about the gift before you will receive the gift. Anybody will be hesitant to receive a gift from a stranger more so without understanding the reason for the gift or what the gift is. Speaking in tongue must be done in proper manner or proper order if done in public and must have somebody to interpret. The interpretation must have a message to somebody which is to inform about specific items not just to repeat a verse in the Bible or personal interpretation from the Bible.

The best application of gift of speaking in tongue is by praying in separtetongue in private. The giberish or "Shambakaka Lumakali shambalili" type is shown by so called Christians only to boast about the Holy Spirit is in them. I believe one of the fruit or proof of the Holy Spirit is in them is by humility and not by boasting. Many books about the baptism of the Holy Spirit is available if you want to learn full knowledge about this subject.
Speaking in tongues/speaking languages is not a separate "prayer language". There's no scripture that will you that. But I agree that the gift of speaking in tongues/speaking languages is still available today for believers. Free for the asking.

1 Corinthians 14:4-6
New King James Version (NKJV)
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for[a] he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?

My conclusion is this. God will give tongues only when it is needed as a sign for those in some form of unbelief.
God gave the ability to speak in tongues to every Christian (1 Cor 12:7).

Believers have taken that gift
Tongues is not a gift, it is a manifestation of the gift of holy spirit.

and tried to make it into something that it was never intended for.
Tongues is intended for the edification of both the church and the individual believer (1 Cor 14:5, Jude 20).

When that happens Satan takes advantage of this and uses those that are weak in the faith and gets them involved with seeking that gift by convincing them it has something to do with being spiritual. So they substitute tongues for hearing the word of God and they never grow in grace and knowledge of Christ.
If a person is "hearing the Word of God", they will seek to the edifying of the church by use of the manifestations.

Tongues, in the church, must be interpreted.

5) I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

15) What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

The original question was:

What does speaking in tongues mean to you? Would you say you have ever experienced it?

My answer is:

Speaking in tongues is something very precious to me.
I am so grateful to God for such a wondrful blessing.

I have been speaking in tongues since 15 December 1983.

So, I have never felt the need to "speak in tongues". Do I not have the holy spirit?

No doubt in my mind I have the holy spirit. I dont believe the true tongue is goobly goo. Thank you all for your input. God is not the God of confusion and goobly goo....

ye i agree with peacefulbeliever, the only way you got saved is the Holy Spirit, and Hes the exact same way you gonna speak in tongues :)

but if you don't have a desire to speak in tongues, then i suppose there's no reason you need to.... but its good fun and Gods used it to teach me plenty, suppose just flow in the other gifts, go raise some dead people walk on water chuck the stars into space....

just do something cos otherwise its pretty pointless just having the Spirit of God to get into heaven one day... kinda like that talents parable. :)

Except for 1 Cor 14:5) "I would that ye all spake with tongues..."

And 1 Cor 14:15) What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also:

And Jude:20) But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

...among others :)
