I imagine this would all be so much easier if we conspired to remove all media and money :p

Yes, but that is why Lucifer, AKA Satan, AKA "The One" (as used by many religions to signify a nameless God, and all others besides our Heavenly father Jehova and his Only begotten son Jesus Christ are of Satan's conspiracy to get us to worship him.) Is the King of Liars, and he is second only to God. Not even the Arch Angel Michael will say a word against Lucifer because of his strength. The Bible says that he will deceive the whole world, it should be no surprise that many of us "Christians" will be mislead. Remember he is the "PERFECT LIAR," money and media are great tools of destruction and deception.

If we need to be able to look everyone square in the eyes before we can go to heaven, and if that means we need to repent of our sin, then isn’t it logical we should want to know exactly what sin is?

There are the two great commandments:
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. Matthew 22:37 RSV
You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:40 RSV

And I take everything in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as commandments. Are they really so hard to follow?

But mainly, in my life, it’s just been a struggle with a very few things, it seems, a small group of bad habits I had to break. Basically, I’d think that if you obey the two great commandments to the best of your ability, and stay humble, chaste, and sober, you’ve gone a long way towards making it possible to look everybody square in the eyes.

The expression “square in the eyes,” I think, is a bit of a misnomer, by the way. We don’t usually look into people’s eyes, do we? We just put our eyes were they can be seen. There is lust in the eyes:

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. 1 John 2:16 RSV

Not even the Arch Angel Michael will say a word against Lucifer because of his strength.
Was it because the archangel feared Lucifer? Or was it because he feared the LORD, whose rightful place it was to do any rebuking in the first place?

The way I understand and first experienced repentance was this. Repentance comes when you begin to see the Holyiness and goodness of God, then you look at your life and realize that all your actions you have done were done in wickedness, selfishness, and out of hatred towards a Holy God. You realize that you love to sin, and that you hate God because He is good and pure. You realize that God is just in His judgement to send you to hell. For you have sinned AGAINST HIM, with hate, malice, bitterness, coldness, and your own belief that you are a good person. When you see the true goodness of God, as manifest in the life of Christ, you recognize that His kindness, mercy, love, and gentleness is alien to you. People want to return evil with evil, we love people based of their actions, God said, I have loved you because I have loved you.

The proper result of seeing this is not to say, I'm gonna start trying to be a better person. That person seeks to make himself like a pharisee, who washes the outside of the cup while the inside is full of filthy and abominations. A man can't change his own heart, that's why it is said, whomever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. You call on Him to change you, not come into your wicked heart, but give you a new heart, set on doing every good work. You cry out to the Lord to save you from the wreched thing you have become, which only reaps death and destruction.

In my repentance that lead to life, it wasn't that I decided to act good and started acting like a christian. Because I knew it would just be an act. Which Jesus said wouldn't cut it. It was that I gave up on trying to be good enough, that God might reveal Himself to me that I might believe. When He did, He changed my heart. That the things I once loved to do I no longer wanted to do. Not that I was just scared to do them because I knew God didn't want me too. But that God had changed my very desires from wanting to sin, to wanting to do things that are in God's nature. This is because He put His Spirit in me. I have died (my wants and desires), and Christ lives in me(God's wants and desires).

Maybe I have been a bit long winded but, before I experienced repentance, I had no idea that it was going to be like that. I didn't even really know I was repenting honestly.

What happened to me was that the Lord showed me the only way to be happy was to give up certain bad habits. I did, and suddenly all my fear vanished, and it’s never returned. It is too amazing to describe.

It was birthed by the Serpent in the Garden of Eden in Genesis chapter 3:4-5

And the serpent said unto the woman,YE SHALL NOT SURELY DIE: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and YE SHALL BE AS GODS, knowing good and evil. (I added the ALL CAPS as emphasis)

To sin in my opinion is to do an act of unrighteousness by the intent of pleasing your own desires, because you are choosing consciously to seek your own pleasures instead of Gods: which is to seek God, serve man and humble yourself with the patience of a chosen child of God whom your oldest brother sacrificed himself for our eternity with him and Our Holy Father by dwelling in the presence of the Holy Spirit. there in lies the only 2 paths. When we choose to follow Gods commands and seek his word, first by testing the authenticity of the book but then accepting the truth there in you find. Or choose a thought of your own devising or the thoughts of strange men who cluster the media and minds of this world.

My definition of “repent” isn’t important. Only the Lord’s definition matters. Now, read this:

You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48 RSV)

We still have work to do, don’t we?
Jesus was preaching to the Jews which were under the law, He was telling them of the change. to change their mind, about looking for the Messiah and believing that the Messiah was now with them. the Kingdom of God is at hand , The Messiah is here. when we call upon the name of the Lord, we then take on His righteousness, and this is the only way anyone will ever enter into the Kingdom , no man cometh to the Father but by me. But now here is where alot is deceived it says to call on the name of the Lord, not Saviour, if we confess him as Lord ( Romans 10 ) not confess our sins but confess Him, Lord with our Mouth and Believe with Our heart that God hath raised Him from the Dead. But if we confess Him as Lord Then we must make Him Lord. the 2 commandments that My Lord Gave Me and all others who make Him Lord Is to love God with all we got , above anything that is , we are to Love God, then we love another and all the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments. it has nothing to do with our righteousness, unless your rigteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes, a scribe was the most righteous person in those times how would one exceed the righteousness of a scribe , if you got close then you would become a scribe yourself, the only way we can exceed that Righteousness , is to come under the righteousnes of the Son of God, the perfect Lamb, The Most Holy One, the One that when God saw the travail of His soul He was satisfied. well let me add this before someone says that paul wrote Romans, Jesus was quoted saying, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish . nothing about whosoever believeth and achieves perfection, will not perish.
But if we make Him Lord, he will lead us unto the way of perfection. two set of verses I feel a need to share ,

Romans 4:18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

I am justified By His works, what he has done,

John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Believe in Him then work for Him, our life is no longer our life But becomes His. we can not work our way into the good Grace of God. Jesus did that for us when God saw the travail of His soul. believe in Him and His works, Not in yours works, we believe that our perfection is what we have to have in order to enter into the Kingdom of God then where is your faith, in Jesus and all He did for you, for where is your Faith in God or in you ?

Keith,

In a later post I apologized for the post you quoted. I said this:

I’m sorry, wwjd_kilden, I was short with you, wasn’t I? “Repent” to me means “to change”—that is: “stop sinning.” The verse I quoted for you tells us we have to be perfect. In practical terms, perhaps, I think we need to be able to look everyone square in the eyes. If something you are doing makes it difficult to always look everybody square in the eyes, then you have to repent of that behavior.

GRACE, grace, Grace, grace,
GRACE, grace, Grace, grace,
GRACE, grace, Grace, grace,
GRACE, grace, Grace, grace,
GRACE, grace, Grace, grace,
GRACE, grace, Grace, grace,

We are His workmanship, meaning that God is doing a work on us.
Being saved by the Spirit, are we now being made perfect BY the flesh?
As many as are lead by the spirit, these are the sons of God.

we are saved by Grace, through faith. meaning that Grace is why, faith is how.

not all who say lord lord will be saved but he who does the will of my father in heaven.

What's the will of the Father?

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Jesus says repent before believe, so maybe some declare Him lord but never repent, they believe that they can live their life how they choose and they will be ok, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Not sure why I wrote this, or if it's to any of you.

God Bless

I really do think we need to repent so we can look each other square in the eyes. If the pope can’t look me square in the eyes, I don’t respect him. If my bishop can’t look me square in the eyes, I don’t respect him. If my pastor can’t look me square in the eyes, I don’t respect him. If my lay leader can’t look me square in the eyes, I don’t respect him. Rank means nothing to me. If you can look me square in the eyes, then I respect you.

Amen on to change our mind about sins but that is not what saves us we repent (on longer allow sin to control us) because we are saved not because that is what saves us. I think you may have lumped people that don't look you in the face wrong, My dad was a God fearing man, that always looked down even when he was talking with someone He would look down at the ground, this however was not because of sin in his life but rather because of a humble spirit that he was and we all know that humbleness is of the Lord.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Well put, Dino. Yours is thus far the best description here of what repentance truly is/means.
