Yes all those apply.
... So you think that slavery is ok, that it's wrong to work on the sabbath, that women can't teach or have authority over men, and that it's sinful to get tattoos?

Leviticus 19:28
"Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves."

Leviticus 25:44
"“Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves."

Exodus 35:2
"Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death."

1 Timothy 2:11-12
"A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet."

But you don't think all those passages still apply today right? Something about the context or the interpretation led you to believe that they were meant for the time and the culture within which they were written... So it is very debatable which instructions in the Bible are meant to be applied today and which are not, the fact that it is debatable makes it kind of foolish to say that people aren't Christians for this...

You think that certain parts of the Bible don't apply today as well, what makes you a Christian but not them? What makes someone who thinks that getting tattoos isn't a sin a Christian, but not a homosexual? Things are never so black and white...
Yes I do believe they apply today. They apply in different ways however. As for the women in church I will refer you to this thread. http://christianchat.com/christian-young-adults-forum/23580-feminism-christianity.html

As for the three old testament passages - we have freedom in Christ - Christ fulfills the law and gives us freedom from its restrictions and demands. This doesn't mean that the morality given to us in the Old testament has changed, on the contrary the morals are exactly the same. - Love your neighbour as yourself, if you wish to debate the law and it's morality with the issue of slavery there

Homosexuality is one of the few things in the bible which is described as an abomination. Romans 1:27 I think it is also states that homosexuality is wrong. Throughout the bible it is Very clear that it is a sin. The major sin's in the bible do not change, Failure to Honour god, which is Idolotary, Sexual Immorality, Murder, Theft, Lying etc. Our culture has just accepted it as normal... This doesn't make it right, just as our culture's acceptance of theft(in the form of music, online software etc) isn't right, or its acceptance of the exploitation of the third world.

Some christian's, sometimes true christians, other times not, do not accept that the bible is Gods word. The entire bible however, states that it is, and I think that God can make himself clear through his word, through different times, cultures and ages.

As for Christians who are practicing homosexuals. They are in grave error, just as those who have sex before marriage are. They need to repent and we need to call them to repent, 1 Corinthians 5 gives a good example of how they should be dealt with, they should be warned, given time to repent and after ignoring rebuke they should be thrown out of their church - Handed over to Satan is the term used - So that they may be saved in the day of judgment.

Sorry if I have came across a bit harshly, I do apologise for that, I will not apologise for the word of God, however.

I'll post more when I have time Meridoc, - As for the single pastor thing though, what do you think of Paul, Timothy and many of the other disciples who were the leaders of the Church and were single? Or Paul where he says that 'he wished all men were as he' - when referring to singleness?

I will agree that it may be wise for some people (depends on the person) not to go into certain types of full time ministry while single, I know I wouldn't want to.

Laylie I'll post more when I have time as well - it might be worth starting another thread on the application of the old testament, particularly the odd verses.

The laws you find in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy (commonly called the Law of Moses, or the Levitical Law) are the national (state) laws, both civil and religious, given by God to His chosen people, the nation of Israel, by way of Moses, during the covenant that God established between Himself and Israel, known as the Old Covenant, in which we find the Messianic prophecies. These laws were only ever binding to the nation of Israel during the Old Covenant.

The prophecies were fulfilled by the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who established a New Covenant between God and the world (both Jew and gentile). With the establishment of the New Covenant, the Old Covenant is no longer in effect, and its laws are not binding. To learn how to live righteously under the New Covenant, look to the New Testament.

The book of Hebrews goes into detail, as well as Romans and a few other places.

Remember that we only know for sure that paul was unmarried because he specifically talked about it, and then remember that he wasn't a pastor, he was a missionary. Different situation and requirements.

no, not in the form it takes now, yes we all need to sabbath, yes the new testament is clear about that, a sin I don't know but God doesn't like it.

Hi layliecalmind. These people are right these laws do apply, but then you might ask, then how can these people be saved? And that would be a good question. I just love the way God works. It is like this:

God gave a simple command right, not to eat the fruit. And then they ate the thing, so this was really like they were saying, WE WILL CREATE OUR OWN TRUTH AND OUR OWN RIGHT AND WRONG! It was like they were trying to determine what was good and what was evil. And that is exactly what people do today. And then remember Adam tried to blame eve, even though he ate from the same tree. So honestly, every Christian has broken these laws, which do apply, and we know the penalty is death.

Kinda heavy aint it? lol. You betcha. It is heavy alright. It is called a yoke. But Jesus said his yoke is easy and his burden is light. You know what this means?

Well, since we are all guilty of breaking the law, we will die in this flesh. But where there is FORGIVENESS, though we have broken the law, we are not judged by the law. Same way in the court, or at least how it should be in the court (with men things are always unjust). However, if you got caught stealing something, and they cops took you in, and they had evidence, as sure as the law will judge you, your penalty is fit for you. Because you broke the law. HOWEVER!! If the judge decides to have mercy on you, then you don't have to go to jail. So though the law said, THOU SHALT NOT COVET, people have, and are subject to death, but when the Lord says, YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN you are no longer subject to the penalty of death. AND IT DOESN"T MATTER WHAT YOU HAVE DONE EVEN THE SECRET THINGS!!!

Grace is that simple. Well, May Jesus bless you.

I can't count the amount of Christians who will point their finger at other Christians and say "But you're not really Christian!" because they have a small difference in interpretation of the Bible, even though they all believe and love/accept Christ as their savior. They don't agree with you on what the Bible says specifically to the small issue of homosexuality, saying that they can't be Christian unless they share your views is just childish.

Also, their church, all the people they've touched and helped, and their children, would disagree with you.
One can be very giving, loving and kind, helping others and doing good.
But if this love is not trully born in Jesus Christ is Lord, it is still a worldly love , not the perfect love that is known in Jesus.
This applies to any that reject the love of Jesus.
There is a differance, at one time years ago, I would have argued otherwise.
But praise God, Jesus has been giving this love since the beginning!

In Jesus, God bless.

There are set courses by God,kind of like an instinct for us,but since we have a choice to make decisions,we can choose not to follow that course although it is in us.

The Bible says that creation testifies there is a God,so they are without excuse.

It will be an instinct in us to believe there is a higher power when we observe creation, but people later on in life choose not to believe that.

The Bible says that a man should have short hair because he is in the image of God,and even nature teaches that it is a shame for a man to have long hair.

When the 1960's came and the youth were saying have your way, rebel against authority, they grew their hair long.

The Bible says that God made man upright,to do good, but they sought out many inventions, their own ways.

There are set courses, like an instinct to us,but we have a choice to not choose that, and if we choose to go against those set courses that God instilled in us,it is wrong.

God made a man and a woman to have a natural attraction to each other, that is what is instilled in us,a set course by God,because God wants a man and a woman to be together,so to go against that set course would be to sin,for it is like an instinct to us.We would be going against the thing that our instinct is telling us not to do.

Also homosexuality is lust of the flesh, and is therefore sin.

The Bible says creation testifies there is a God,so they are without excuse, but when they knew God,they did not want to believe there was a God,but wanted to believe things came about in another fashion, like evolution,or the occult, that are nature worshippers.

After they continued on in that mind set,God giving them time to repent and acknowledge truth, when they did not change,God gave them over to a reprobate mind, which means God stopped working with them, and all they seen is the fleshy ways, which in the flesh dwells no good thing.

They became filled with all unrighteousness because the flesh will always be in rebellion against the Spirit, and all they could see is the flesh, and one of the things included in that unrighteousness is homosexuality, which shows that homosexuality is a fleshy pleasure, lust of the flesh, and sin.

It is an instinct in us for a man to have a natural attraction for a woman, and a woman to have a natural attraction to a man,and to become homosexual,is to go against yourself for the instinct is in you,and to go against God,for it is lust of the flesh.

So to be homosexual, not only do you sin against God,but you sin against yourself.
