What does it mean to be wise? According to the Bible, wisdom is more precious than gold and silver. Fear of God is said to be the beginning of wisdom. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

Wisdom is not the same as knowledge.

Wisdom is the ability to make the right (and righteous) choices and decisions in all situations, and then act on them. Wisdom comes from God, and is given to those who are His children (who also have the fear or reverence of the Lord). But the books of Wisdom (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job, and Song of Solomon, even Psalms) are in Scripture to give believers practical guidance in wisdom.

There are many very intelligent and knowledgeable people who seriously lack wisdom. By the same token there are many ordinary and unlearned people who have great wisdom. Life experiences are meant to teach us wisdom, but that is not always the case. And many disastrous situations could have been avoided if people had simply used some wisdom and discretion (which go hand-in-hand).

Solomon's wisdom was illustrated by how he handled the issue of two women disputing over one child. He had no intention of killing the child, but by confronting the two mothers with this choice, he discovered who was the true mother.

Ok, I like the reference to Solomon. What made his decision particularly wise? I mean, it actually is quite morbid the approach he took, yet the conclusion was that a child was reunited with its mother. Is wisdom allowed to use trickery?

It was not trickery but the concealing of his plan from everyone else. And that is wisdom.

In the world of Intelligence, "need to know" is a basic principle, so everyone does not have "Top Secret" clearance, only those with the need to know. That is wisdom, otherwise the enemies of a country will know exactly what is being discussed or planned, and sabotage it.

When Jesus began speaking in parables, His intention was to conceal spiritual truths from His enemies, and only reveal them to His disciples. So "seeing they would not see, and hearing they would not understand" because they had rejected Him. That was divine wisdom, since the principle was to not throw pearls before swine, or give dogs that which was holy.

Ok, makes sense so far. But isn't our enemy able to hear everything we are up to? So how can we even manage a 'need to know' attitude?

I see you edited a little bit. Great info! But, how can we apply that today?

That's a good question. As you know Satan is not omniscient, but at the same time one should present one's concerns' to God alone in prayer, and as you also know, prayer does not have to audible. Your spirit can pray which you remain silent.

So, always be in prayer...ever watchful. I feel like I've heard that somewhere...

Knowledge is just facts (ingredients). And being smart is just a storage of knowledge, and knowing the results of putting a bunch of facts together (the fridge). But being wise is knowing how to use your knowledge and smarts in the best way (cooking). If you put eggs, flour, butter, and chocolate chips on the counter these ingredients will not turn into a cookie. It's not enough to have knowledge, wisdom is knowing how to use what you've got to produce the best result.

So, wisdom is like making cookies?
