In Mark Ch. 5,
we are told of Jesus casting out an unclean spirit (Legion) out of a mad man who lived in tombs. There is much to be said here and learned. My own personal opinion is this was a show of force by God after Jesus had been tempted by the Devil; Jesus had already healed people and done some miraculous things , but this was different.
First off, the death of over 2000 animals of a herd or flock of any kind would have traveled like wildfire! 'Oh my God, what did they die of, do i need to protect my animals? These things would have traveled like a flash mob, and later the fuller story would be known. Second, a mad man who could not be restrained by man or chains was mad whole and sent home to his friends and family to testify of this glorious thing. Thirdly, this would have cost the owner of the swine a fortune! Maybe speaking here of the price to be paid.
Was this a sign to those of Old Covenant Israel, of things to come to this perverse and unclean generation? They thought the Gentiles (Nations), were less than dogs compared to them, had they now became as Swine in God's eyes?
I don't believe that the swine were there by chance in the Word of God. Swine were unclean and neither their blood nor meat were accepted by God in the Tabernacle or Temple worship.
When the swine died were the unclean spirits trapped in bondage until the time of their judgement, or were the loosed to roam in dry places?
The thing that i find most interesting, is the symbolic imagery of the unclean being cast into the unclean! Is this symbolic of the death of those who die unclean not covered and cleansed by the blood of Jesus; to either those back then or to us now?
Once several years ago I was called upon by my mentor to cast a demon(s) out of a schizophrenic and I did as my mentor asked and the man was healed and had to quit taking the psychotic medicine he had taken for much of his life. Because now it made him deathly sick when he took it. The next week his testimony was that he had never heard the birds sing because there had always been voices in his head as long as he could recall. He was amazed and so thankful, from then on as far as I know, him and his wife got up every morning, had coffee and would set and listen to the birds sing before they would do anything else. This man and wife never left my mentors ministry where ever they went; so I can see why this man Jesus freed was so grateful and wanted to follow Him.
But why the unclean cast into the unclean?

If you read the story in Luke, it's a little more clear. Where this happened was not Jewish country. Jesus had taken his ministry out of Israel and into pagan territory. The swine were there because the area was not Jewish. Also, after this event, Jesus was basically kicked out of town. They DID resent the damage to the herd. They were not yet ready to get rid of their morning bacon and their pork chop dinners. Right after this, Jesus came back and sends out the 12 two-by-two, thus beginning the growth of His ministry in Israel, so He could perfect the work among those who were ready to receive.

It's tempting to say that Jesus moved out of God's timing and He should have known better, that He needed to wait for Pentecost to go outside Israel. Jesus of course, would never do that as a mistake. He did it as an example to us. "Unclean being cast into unclean" is as good a way to say it as any, I suppose, although some here will resent the implication of my next paragraph. I think I would say it like this: God always works to fix everything. If we ask Him to fix C, He will fix A and B for us in the process, and if we don't want B fixed, there is going to be a problem.

You are most fortunate to have had a mentor who recognized God's perfect time for you to cast out that demon, the time when the man was ready for A and B to be fixed as well. There is a thread going on now you might want to have a look at, to see how it could have ended up when people are not yet ready to receive A and B, but you'll need to scan the whole thing, especially after the first 24 hours of its existence. http://christianchat.com/bible-discussion-forum/61157-prayer-renunciation.html

I have no idea what it means in terms of it's symbolism. I do agree with you that real stories in the Old Testament and the gospels have a symbolic meaning behind them. The Holy Spirit has revealed a few things to me along these lines but nothing on this story. I will pray about it and see .

Jesus was no doubt sending a message to the Dragon; not trying to scare him off, but to lure him in! Satan had been successful in defending his turf since Adam, this Jesus of Nazareth would be no different. Thus the road to the cross through God's adversary, the Devil, who told Jesus, all you can see (speaking primarily of the covenant land of Israel), belongs to me. Yes after this Jesus sent out the twelve, two by two into this covenant land, to a covenant people. Jesus began a 3 1/2 year campaign of unrest to the demons in the covenant land of Israel, that would end in His death and their defeat!

I am reminded of the others that chased out demons, and one particular group that tried but ended up running down a street naked, chased by a man posessed...
Also one thing I learned.... The demons knew Jesus as the Son of God. The evil demons did NOT fear the men that was chased down the road naked, yet the demons in the tombdweller were VERY scared of Jesus.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit that one day will punish all demons. That is what the demons confessed... So for me there is one more lesson to remember... God said if you clean the house, and the demon goes through waterless places he might return with seven others. And the possessed person will be worse off, EXCEPT if you fill the house with the GOOD SPIRIT! The Holy Spirit, and the deamon would return to inhabit again, but would be SCARED OF THE STRONG MAN ARMED IN HIS HOME...

One thing that I find so very interesting about this passage is that, as soon as Jesus stepped out of the boat, the demon possessed man ran to Him and fell at His feet. The demons ran to Jesus and fell at His feet.
