Have sat under so many learned pastors. I got to sit under the ministry of the pastor that married my parents. Wonderful man of God, so deep into the Word, and his son became a pastor and I sat under his ministry. There are great men of God from revivalists to preachers to evangelists. Leonard Ravenhill comes to mind, William Booth, Billy Sunday, apologists CS Lewis, Lee Strobel, Josh Mc Dowell. Just a few that pop into my mind.
Is Josh still with us?

Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Joh 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Act 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Jas 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

People knowledgeable in the word of God is beneficial to tell people about the word of God and the Gospel of Christ so they will know.

And to preach about the word of God.

But the Bible says to search the scriptures to make sure they are telling you the truth.

Which the preacher does not get more wisdom from God to understand His word more than anybody else for everybody can have the same wisdom.

The Bible says we need not that any man teach us so after we hear about the word of God and the Gospel of Christ we can study the word of God and understand the same thing as the greatest of preachers without being taught by a man.

For what would make them more special to understand than what a common pew sitter can understand if it is the Holy Spirit that teaches us.

Which some people probably depend too much on what other people say instead of reading the Bible and letting the Spirit teach them.

The Spirit is our best teacher of understanding the Bible and a person can read the Bible and be taught by the Spirit and it would benefit them the most.

No human teacher is going to do better than the Spirit in teaching the word of God to a person.
Try answering the question with what books outside the Bible you have read.

Why does only learning from the Bible seem prideful to you?

We should all be humbling ourselves before God and his word while seeking the Holy Spirit to not only teach us all things, but also to lead us and guide us into all truth.
Sometimes, I recognize a paragraph that was copied from a book and google a sentence from that quote. I will ask them where they read that from. Then, the person is dishonest or at best forgetful and starts a Bible only rant just like the one already posted in this thread. Then in a post in that thread, I will post the link(not in driect response to the ranter) to where the paragraph came from. When someone posts a Bible alone rant in reply to a simple question like the one that started this thread. I see it as being very prideful.

When you read the Bible with the guidance of the Holy Spirit it is not prideful to say you only follow the scriptures.. Because one trusts in the guidance of the Holy Spirit and not in their own intellect,, Neither do they trust in other men or human institutions like theological colleges.. In the end if the Holy Spirit is not guiding you then you will only end up with false interpretations of scripture..
Why do those who claim to be taught by the Holy Spirit come up with contradicting opinions? Would it not be more honest to say, I have learned also from teachers that God has given to the Church?

Now what books other than the Bible have you read and learned from???

Great choice!

ANYTHING I ever hear or read I always test it against Scripture!

BUT the best way is to sit in the Lord's presence and pray with a Bible in hand!
JB, what books have you learned from outside of the Bible?

The question was from who one got their doctrine, and stated that to say the Bible was prideful.
The Word of God is the only source for true doctrine.
There are good teachers and books that may be helpful, but only if what is taught is in agreement with Scripture.
What I have discovered over the years is that most are nothing more than opinions and efforts to prove a doctrine that is not in agreement with Scripture.
Do you agree Jesus is God is in the Bible? Assumming you do, have you ever read a book to improve your understanding of the Doctrine?

I don't think it's prideful to say you got your beliefs from the bible. We can certainly glean from teachers who are sound tho.
There's a danger when someone or a denomination holds certain people's writings up so high as to use them to interpret scripture I think. SDA's with Ellen White, LDS with Joseph Smith. You can get pretty far off track that way.
Did you tell us any books outside the Bible you have read? Have you discussed any of those books with someone more mature in the Faith?

I agree... what a stupid use of the word "prideful". That's not prideful, seeking God's will over your own. If anything, it's prideful to seek other sources that make sense to you. The word of God does not always make sense to us, yet we are called to trust it. I think that's actually an aspect of humility.
Why do those who claim to be taught by the Holy Spirit come up with contradicting opinions? Would it not be more honest to say, I have learned also from teachers that God has given to the Church?

The bible is supreme... if the book contradicts the bible it is leading people away from truth.

Each church has a range of books that teach their doctrines.
So if a Baptist gives book to a JW or SDA they will find doctrinal differences.

Maybe toss that out and let Him start to teach you not man. Its wise to read and study from others but.. what I believe did not come from any man but the son of man Jesus Christ who is in me and by His sweet holy Spirit He leads me He guides me into all truth not man. Prideful or am I giving all praise all glory to Him again not man. Not going to give any man and praise and thanks. That all goes to God for no man will glory in His sight.
We can walk and chew gum, at the same time. There is nothing from with learning from the Teachers and Pastors God has equipped the Church with.

I don't agree it's prideful to rely on scripture alone for doctrine. Maybe to Catholics, for example, it might seem that way because they get their doctrine from mother Rome and anyone who doesn't march in step with Rome is prideful. A person might be prideful and present their belief in scripture alone in a prideful way; but this sort of person would likely be prideful in their presentation of anything. Just believing in scripture alone doesn't make a person prideful.

Like many, you assume that if a man says he is called of God it is so.
If all were called of God, there would not be so many different "interpretations" of Scripture that is very prevalent in the many book out there. So little agreement on any subject.
If you feel it an advantage for you to spend time reading after one of these people, instead of studying the Word of God, that is your choice.
I will spend all my time in a study of God's Word. That way I do not have to search the Scripture to check after one of the men.
But for someone to suggest that to do so and state that all my doctrine comes from personal
study of God's Word is "prideful" is very judgement on their part and I will not let that go unchallenged.
Why do those who claim to be taught by the Holy Spirit come up with contradicting opinions? Would it not be more honest to say, I have learned also from teachers that God has given to the Church?

It is prideful to think your intreptation of scripture is inspired by God.

I was responding to a post that said I was prideful if I stated my only source of truth was Scripture. That is a stupid statement.
I encourage all to study with others.
But in my opinion, it is a waste of time to shift through a multitude of books seeking the truth when it is in one book, the Bible.
Do as you wish, but do not judge others for doing as they wish.
Why do those who claim to be taught by the Holy Spirit come up with contradicting opinions? Would it not be more honest to say, I have learned also from teachers that God has given to the Church?

The very partial list would be:

J.R. Franklin Lenentine, Harley Olson, Edwin(Rockey) Homer Bob Mumford, Derek Prince, Father Richard Rohr, Sister Mary Augustine, T.l. Osborn, Charles Schmitt, Charles Simpson, Don Basham, C.S. Lewis, J.Edwin Orr, T.D. Jakes, Oswald Smith, Joyce Meyer,Watchman Nee, Calvin Funchess, Greg White, Jason Sandifer, Billy Graham, Malcom Smith, and many more.

What's YOUR list?
Gorden Fee and Josh are at the top of my list. I have read most books on apologetics, cults, commentaries, church history and many more

Yes, I did learn a lot from all my commentaries and theological tomes. I learned it was a lot of hooey! They taught me all the wrong interpretations so learning the scriptures was quite easy after that.
Why do those who claim to be taught by the Holy Spirit come up with contradicting opinions? Would it not be more honest to say, I have learned also from teachers that God has given to the Church?

Nothing wrong with learning from others; but we have to be very careful. You can throw a dart in almost any direction and hit a false teacher, false prophet, or false apostle. People are a lot better off learning the scriptures for themselves.

Thank God the JW's may read the truth from a book a brother in Christ gave them.
