Mar 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe,.... Not all of them, but some; and not always, only for a time; and which were necessary for the confirmation of the Gospel, and the establishment of Christianity in the world; and not only believing hearers, but believing ministers of the word, are chiefly designed; and this is said, for the encouragement both of those that preach the Gospel, and of them that hear, believe and obey. The Persic version, contrary to all others, reads, "ye shall show signs and wonders to them that believe not"; see 1Co_14:22.

1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

1Cor12:7(last part) to profit withal; not to make gain of, as Simon Magus intended, could he have been possessed of them; nor to encourage pride or envy, or to form and foment divisions and parties; but for profit and advantage, and that not merely private, or a man's own, but public, the good of the whole community or church, to which the least grace or gift, rightly used, may contribute.

1 Cor14:2 speaketh not unto men; to the understanding, profit, and edification of men: but unto God: to his praise and glory, and he only knowing, who knows all languages, and every word in the tongue what is said; excepting himself, unless there should be any present capable of interpreting:

1Cor14:2 for no man understandeth him: or "heareth him": that is, hears him, so as to understand him; he may hear a sound, but he cannot tell the meaning of it, and so it is of no use and advantage to him:

1Cor14:2 howbeit in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries; though under the influence and by the extraordinary gift of the Spirit he has, and to his own Spirit and understanding, and with great affection and devotion within himself, he speaks of the deep things of God, and the mysteries of his grace, the most glorious truths of the Gospel, yet the meaning of his voice and words not being known, he is a barbarian to them that hear him; and though what he delivers are truths of the greatest importance, they are a mere jargon to others, being unintelligible.

Paul is not denigrating the gift of praying in tongues, indeed, he stated that he prayed in tongues more than them all. He is advocating that they seek to prophecy especially, that is, more than tongues. Not in place of tongues. For each is a gift of the Spirit. Can you not see how beautiful this gift of tongues is, that Paul would describe it as one who does not speak to men, but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries. Why did you leave out but to God ? I believe that it is very important to speak to God, in a language which He approves of because it is a gift of His Spirit.

Just for the record, I speak in prophecy also, and when I do, it is for the edification of those hearing. In both cases, I am not speaking what I know, but what the Spirit prompts through me.

It would be more worth our time if this were all in one thread. Some of what you're discussing here is in your original.

Sometimes you just have to hear it from another prospective to be able to understand; I didn't see anyone bring up The Book of Dr. Luke, this is where it helped me to understand this better, CH:21 Ver 14-15, maybe this can help someone else I pray. Love to ALL in CHRIST Forever
