How about the state of the earth and universe at the original creation?

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

What condition was it in?

Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

The morning stars and sons of God shouted for joy. Because the earth was chaos and confusion? (alternate translations for tohu and bohu) No because it was beautiful and perfect...

Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

But here we find tohu (without form) and bohu (void). Here is another place tohu is used...

Deu 32:10 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.

and it is translated waste. Here the word tohu is translated confusion...

Isa 24:10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.

That is a real problem...

1Co 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

So if God is not the author of confusion, how did the earth come to be in chaos and confusion?

Jer 4:23
I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.
Jer 4:24
I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.
Jer 4:25
I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.
Jer 4:26
I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger.
Jer 4:27
For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.
Jer 4:28
For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.
Jer 4:29
The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.

So what happened in Gen 1:2?

Psa 104:30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

God renewed the face of the earth. He recreated it after Satan's temper tantrum.

2. Moving, hovering, brooding – this perhaps represents the molding of the primitive materials of the infant earth. It seems to lend to the idea of preparation. At this point it is dark, empty, shapeless, and covered with water. In this state it is completely non-functional. The result of the Spirits work is an earth that is given form and distinctiveness. That which was empty would teem with abundance. What was shrouded in darkness will become light.

You do realize that there are two accounts here don't you? Gen 1 is the overview and Gen 2 reveals details about the creation.

God renewed the face of the earth. He recreated it after Satan's temper tantrum.
It did not need renewing after genesis 1. Everything was perfect and God rest.

What about genesis 4 and then 5? It starts with God, then Lord God, then Lord Adam, then Adam.

He creates physical bodies first....then has a couple of missed opportunities to affix the soul of man.

The Created State of the Earth, 2.
A. Formless, shapeless, waste.
B. Void, empty
C. Dark
D. Aquatic, covered with water.
E. “And the Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters.”
We are not told specifically what the Spirit's involvement is with the earth at this point. We are only told that it is being performed by the Spirit and we can see in the verses that follow what the result of his work was.

1. If we consider the work preformed by the Holy Spirit throughout the rest of scripture perhaps we can understand something of his participation in creation. The Holy Spirit is always seen functioning in three ways.
a. The Holy Spirit functions as the controlling agent.
b. He functions as the conforming agent.
c. He functions as the organizing agent.
Each time we see the Holy Spirit operating in scripture, it is always in one of these three functions.

The funtion of the Holy spirit is this
[h=3]Ezekiel 37[/h]King James Version (KJV)

37 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,
2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.
3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O LordGod, thou knowest.
4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.
5 Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:
6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am theLord.
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.
8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.
9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord God; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.

Note Adam bone and flesh then the Spirit gave life So shall be the resurrecion in the future

I really had not intended to discuss the function of the H.S. If you want to do that he can discuss that in another thread.
