I was reading John again and when in the final chapter read again about the beloved disiple. Also what Jesus said about how the beloved disiple may remain untill his return.
The referances at the bottem of the page left much to be questioned.
I was wondering what your take on this message is.
Im not sure about it as I am more fasinated by it than anything else.
So, what is your take on it?
Thankyou and God bless, pickles

John 21:22, 23 states: Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?” (NKJV)

I my modest opinion, Jesus was trying to focus Peter's attention on what Jesus wanted Peter to do which is outlined in John 21:15-19 i.e. Feed My lambs ...Tend My sheep ... Feed My sheep ... Follow Me, rather than focusing on "... the disciple whom Jesus loved..." and what Jesus wanted him to do.

But he did remain until He returned to visit him when he was on the island of Patmos.

yep..all Jesus was saying is it has nothing to to with Peter (or anyone for that matter) if He so wills it. The brethren jumped to conclusions...great example how some hear what they want to hear .

Thankyou all. I figured that was the situation. But to consider the possibuility that one of his disiples was still here was pretty amazing. Can you imagine the conversation you could have with him? But wisdom is the better choice as Im sure many would follow the disiple rather than Jesus.
Thankyou and God bless. pickles

Often the coming refers to his coming in judgment but not necessarily in person. He came in power at the destruction of Jerusalem. He came in power at the fall of the reign of Domition.

He will come again in person at the last day to take us home forever.

I've always kept that Idiea that he would live till Jesus's return in the back of my mind, imagine a two thousand year old man walking around somewhere on Earth today.

The "other disciple, whom Jesus loved" - what does the Bible say?

Pickles,

BelovedDiscipleBibleStudy.com has a free eBook on the beloved disciple that seeks to pull together all of the biblical evidence on the unnamed "disciple whom Jesus loved" and since it cites nothing but the scriptures (no non-Bible sources are cited) it helps to highlight Bible facts about this "other disciple" that are often overlooked.

Hope it helps.
