I was wondering what lesson, or lessons, we learn from Job.

Perhaps one is that rather than spending a lot of time complaining to the Lord, we should spend as much time as we can listening to his voice, since he is always trying to lead us to a happier life.

Job 19:25-27

I know that my redeemer[c] lives,
and that in the end he will stand on the earth.[d]
26 And after my skin has been destroyed,
yet[e] in[f] my flesh I will see God;
27 I myself will see him
with my own eyes

he saw Jesus

Hi resurrection33,
God tests us and refines us to the nth degree. We do not understand His ways. (loss of wife and family) Satan has enormous authority so we had better cling to Jesus. That authority is capable of causing illness and death, of bringing raiders and of destroying our wealth. Satan can touch any part of our lives. A poster on one thread said God does not speak to us except through scripture, but here we have Satan impacting on this life here on earth. God restores. Never lose your trust in God. Just always give thanks and be patient.

Hi 33
Your point is very true. Job didn't curse God. He didn't lean on his friends. They were a mess. His wife was a mess. He stood firm on God. He was blessed back many times by standing with God. He was rich in God and in material things. God sifts us and he lets the devil try to tempt us. We better know how to fight the devil. We better know who we are in Christ.

I don't agree with Ed. The devil has no authority over us. We have all authority over the devil in the name of Jesus. Ed should know better than to say that.

Hi loveschild,
In the story of Job, did Satan attack Job. Did Job lose his oxen and donkeys and servants, bar one, by Sabeans, ( presumably sent by Satan): all his sheep, and servants by fire which fell from the sky, ( from Satan?) : his camels and servants by three raiding parties of the Chaldeans; his 7 sons and 3 daughters by a fierce wind which brought the house down ; and Job was afflicted with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head, his skin black and peeling and his body burning with fever.

And you say that Satan has no authority over us.

I say that only in Jesus do we receive protection. Without protection we would be Satan fodder.
As Job is a witness for God so are we, if we obey our Holy and Almighty God through our God given Saviour, Jesus.

You say you (we) ( do not include me there) have all authority over the devil in the name of Jesus. If this is true than you are responsible for every evil under the son because you have authority and do not exercise it to help all the persons suffering in the world.
I say, Be obedient to the will of God. Live and trust in Jesus. Only Jesus who lives in us can "keep" us.

ed,it looks to me like you read the story,But don't look like you understood what you read.
satan has Absolutly No power over us that God doesnt give him..........look at every thing that satan did to job,he asked for permission.

Job 1:10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
Job 1:11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. Job 1:12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
Job 2:4 And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
Job 2:5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
Job 2:6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. Job 2:7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

every time satan asked for permission and every time God gave it to the adversary, now look at what Jesus did for us,
Luk 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Luk 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
do you suppose that thats that same hedge that God had around job?

If you go out without an umbrella, you get wet.

(I go without an umbrella sometimes)

1 Peter 5:8 *Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 *Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

The devil seeks whom he may devour and the whom refers to the brethren.

I should point out the scripture says may, not will.

The devil can't do anything unless we let him or refuse to be under God's protection.

Hi Ed

When the bible the word of God says for you to put Satan under your feet what do you think it means? The bible is very clear that Satan is going to attack us all of our lives just as he did Jesus then you are to rejoice because Jesus has taught us to have power over Satan. Get behind me Satan. Satan bows to God and all we have to do is say the name of God Jesus and Satan flees. You should know this. It is because of people like you who don't know who they are in Christ and they don't know the powers given to them in Christ is just why Satan has such powers on this earth.

Satan had to ask God if he could do anything to Job. Pay attention.....God gave Satan the permission to do these things to Job. Plus God stood there and watched as Job would not give up his hope in his God to come to his rescue. Why did God do this? God was using Satan to sift Job. By Job standing firm God was giving Job the means to grow stronger and stronger in God.

Satan did not by any means win anything over Job.

Who lead Jesus to be tempted by Satan? The Holy Spirit did. Why? It gave Jesus the means to put Satan in his place.

Just as you and I are to do all the days of our lives.

We have all power over Satan in the name of Jesus and it's about time people lived in that power given to them by God.

Ed

Job's health was given back and he lived a long time. The children that were taken were in heaven what a joy. He was given a bunch more children. He was also given a bunch more things. He was more rich after than before.

I love you Ed!

I have a CD with a great song about the story of Job. It's called "Blessed Be the Name of the Lord." It's southern Gospel and sang by a family in Kentucky. It really helped me understand a little more about the story of Job. God allowed Satan to do things to Job. As long as Satan didnt take away his life. This was a test of Job's faith in God. Job remained strong in his faith and didn't curse God. One of the great lines in the song:
♫"The Lord giveth, He taketh away, Blessed be the name of the Lord."♫
God knew what He was doing the whole time. Job proved himself to be a strong man of faith.
In the end, it made him stronger.
When going through a hard time, I like to read chapters from Job. It really helps :)

We learn that true love for God exists, as Satan accused Job of loving God only because he recieved blessings.

Hi NoahsDad,
I couldn't agree with you more. Never have i denied that Satan is limited completely by the boundaries God places on him.
Ezekiel 14:13 Son of man, if a country sins against me by being unfaithful and I stretch oujt my hand against it to cut off its food supply and send famine upon it and kill its men and their animals, even if these three men - Noah, Daniel, and Job - were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign Lord.

I feel save in saying that Job was one of the few special men in God's judgment, yet Job lost all his stock of differing kinds, many servants, his 7 children, his house, his health, his wealth and his respect in the community. We are called to share in the sufferings of Jesus. What I am saying is that Satanic attacks at least to those who believe are under the control of God and unless it is for God's glory, we have no authority over Satan. To cast out satan at your will is to cast out God's plan. Utter foolishness.

Hi loveschild,
Love you right back. Ask yourself this question. If you lived in the time of Job and Job was your friend and when Job fell sick, could you cast out satan and heal Job or would you have to wait until God's purpose was fulfilled.

And so it is today. Unless God gives direct individual instruction on a single particular matter ( assuming you don't have a person healing ministry ) then you can not tell why that person is ill or suffering. Maybe it is God's doing for that persons teaching and instruction.

Hi PrincessoftheKing,
Yes, Job is a great story for us and it helps us understand so much in life and teaches us patience. But no one could heal Job until God's purpose had been fulfilled.

Hi Ed

We have to remember back in Job's day they lived in any good or any bad came from God. If something bad was happening to a person they must have sinned to deserve the bad.

That's why Job's friends were saying he was being punished by God. Job knew he didn't sin. He didn't know what was going on but he had the sense to know he didn't need to know what all was happening he just knew he had to keep his faith in God.

Actually back in those days they weren't given the name of Christ ot cast devils out Jesus hadn't died on the cross yet.

You make a very good point about we can't just go casting out devils because God may be using the sickness to bring the person to Christ or they may be being rekuked by God for some sin.

He has told me not to lay hands unless he tells me.

I may see one in torment and the compassion I have I may want them released but this may not be Gods will yet.

Hi loveschild,
Some years ago, after Jesus called me in 2001, I asked Him, why I was not healed. I used scripture to raise this question. Ie Matthew 9:5 For which is easier to say, "Your sins are forgiven you." or to say, "Arise and walk?"
To my heart He told me that my sins were forgiven, and that I was not ill. Some time later, after hurting my leg I again asked, and very strongly He told my heart, "Direction" All I could think of is , what direction, where, when and maybe today I am still learning the depth of Direction. But God uses all of me to direct me, my health, my psychological makeup, my bowels, etc etc etc. He keeps restoring, providing where needed and what ever He gives I know is sufficient in abundance for the task at hand. If I think what is provided is not in abundance, I know I am looking in the wrong direction. His constant provision is also a guideline.

These scriptures to me are relevant.
1 Cor 11:30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves we would not be judged 32 But when we are judged we are chastened by the Lord that we may not be condemned with the world.

Do you think this scripture speaks against the idea of a purgatory?

I have a few key verses of scripture if you would like me to post them here. I don't want my posts to be long and boring.
God bless you loveschild.
